Immigration Reform Raised At Florida Capitol

There's a new push for Florida to speak out on immigration reform.

The state is home to an estimated 800,000 undocumented immigrants.

Lawmakers, civil rights advocates and the League of Women Voters say passage of immigration reform would help boost Florida's economy and strengthen the state's families.

Supporters are hoping state lawmakers will pass a resolution calling on Congress to pass immigration reform.

"My thoughts are, it couldn't hurt and my thoughts are with Florida being one of the swing states, if we were to pass it, folks have to take it seriously," said State Senator Darren Soto of Kissimmee.

Soto says as it stands now, states like Florida are having to pass measures on their own to address immigrant issues.

He's says he's encouraged lawmakers may pass a bill to give undocumented immigrants in state tuition.

However, he says a measure to allow them to have driver's licenses is unlikely to pass this session.
