Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson would rather bankrupt his city for illegal immigrants than admit that being a sanctuary city is a mistake.

Johnson is asking the Chicago City Council for an additional $70 million in funding to handle illegal immigrants, on top of the $150 million the city has already budgeted for this year and the $300 million the city has already spent. Chicago is projected to have a budget deficit of $1.5 billion this year and $1.9 billion next year, but Johnson wants to tap surplus funds to spend on illegal immigrants.

The solution to Chicagos side of the border crisis is pretty simple. Admit that Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) was right, rescind your status as a sanctuary city, and call on the federal government not for bailout money but for border security. The only reason Chicago is being overwhelmed by illegal immigrants is that Texas rightfully thinks sanctuary cities that are encouraging illegal immigration (and shaming those that dont support illegal immigration) must shoulder a share of the burden. All Chicago has to do is admit it was wrong.

Johnson would rather cling to his ego and ideology, though, and in the process, drive Chicago deeper into a budget hole. So would the city council, which killed an anti-sanctuary city referendum in its cradle because it was worried city residents would vote for it. It is not an exaggeration to say that Johnson and the city council are actually prioritizing illegal immigrants over the (taxpaying) residents of their city. In fact, in asking for federal aid, they are prioritizing illegal immigrants over other cities residents as well.

Perhaps Johnson and the city council simply thought they would never have to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to being a sanctuary city. Now that they are being forced to, though, they have decided they would rather run Chicago into the ground than dare break Democratic orthodoxy and hand Republicans a win. They have a clear path out of this but are refusing to take it, instead favoring burning through the hard-earned money of taxpaying residents and nonresidents of the city.

On the bright side, Chicagos choice to continue this path also means the city is surely willing to continue to alleviate the strain on border towns thanks to President Joe Bidens border crisis. Abbott should continue to send more illegal immigrants to Chicago, which has chosen to be so accommodating to them.
