Hillary Clinton: Reviving a party parched for leadership

Ex-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: A run for the White House must begin by reconnecting with those who, in husband Bills words, work hard and play by the rules.

The Clintons gave it their all in Election 2014 but were unable to rescue endangered Democratic incumbents or carry into office promising new party leaders.

A bigger task awaits:Hillary Clinton must now come to the rescue of a defeated, bedraggled party. Its what you hear in this Washington, and from Democrats who abandoned the Clintons during the rush to Obama in 2008.

Curiously, the Democrats 2014 debacle gives the partys 2016 frontrunner opportunities to leapfrog the Obama presidency and define choices for the 2016 presidential election.

Washington, D.C., is almost certain to experience two years of trench warfare. The Republicans will overreach. They always do after big victories. Extremists (e.g. Ted Cruz) will push GOP leaders to the right, and undercut any and all compromises.

President Obama will hunker down, surrounded by a small inner circle. He will wield his veto pen, defend the social safety net and hope history vindicates policies that kept the Great Recession from becoming a second Great Depression. Defense can be tenacious, but victory lies in the other direction.

Interviewed when he came out here for Dave Reichert, ex-House Speaker Newt Gingrich talked of doing deals when Bill Clinton was in the White House. They fought, but they dealt. After the government shutdown, the two ends of Pennsylvania Avenue were able to negotiate welfare reform and a hike in the minimum wage.

Its not likely to happen in a climate that is more partisan, more polarized than 20 years ago.

The opportunity:Hillary Clinton can talk over the gridlocked capital. Most of her prospective Republican opponents, save for Jeb Bush, are tied down in the trenches.

Hillary Clinton signs books in Seattle. The book tour showed her rustiness, and the book wasnt exactly a page-turner.
