Nuclear energy pillar of European Energy Union : The initiative of Romanian Energy Minister Andrei Gerea

Romanias Energy, SMEs and Business Environment Minister Andrei Gerea (photo) as Chairman of the group of pro-nuclear member states has sent to European Union Vice President Maros Sefcovic and EU Commissioner Arias Canete a letter in which he supports technological neutrality in the energy mix, including through the development of nuclear energy, as part of the process of creating the Energy Union. The document is endorsed by Romania, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. Likewise, Hungary has sent a letter to Vice President Maros Sefcovic, joining the group of pro-nuclear member states and expressing its support for the proposals presented in the Romanian ministers letter. From our point of view, the energy produced in nuclear power plants plays a serious role in ensuring energy security, not just for the states that support this technology but also for the European Union as a whole. This is the main message we want to send. Moreover, the energy produced in this manner has low impact on the environment compared to that produced through other technologies. Including nuclear energy in the nuclear mix allows us to set out on the right path in what concerns attaining the goals of limiting carbon emissions at European Union level, Andrei Gerea stated.

The document transmitted by Andrei Gerea points out, among others, the importance of promoting nuclear energy as a means of diversifying energy sources against the backdrop of pursuing the EUs climate change goals, namely the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, it emphasizes the role played by nuclear energy in consolidating a mix that would ensure the energy security of both the member states of the pro-nuclear group and of the European Union in general.

The document reiterates the intention to promote nuclear energy among member states that choose and support this source of energy. Nuclear projects should find EU support and financing, because they cannot be absent from the main sources of energy. We want to exploit this resource while simultaneously continuing efforts to enhance the degree of safety through research and innovation in the domain, Gerea opines.

Romanian Energy Minister Andrei Gereas initiative to propose to European bodies, on behalf of pro-nuclear member states, support measures for the development of the energy sector through the use of nuclear technologies has been welcomed by several political and economic circles within the EU.
