NY Democrats speak out against Iran nuke deal

Congressional Democrats from New York have lashed out at the Obama administrations deal on Irans nuclear program, arguing that it doesnt go far enough to block the rogue nation from developing bombs.

The prospect of an Iran armed with nuclear weapons is simply intolerable, and I have long said that we must do everything we can do to prevent Iran from ever obtaining such weapons, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-Manhattan) said in a statement.

The ultimate question will not be Is this the best deal in the world? but rather, Is this the best course of action ... to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons?

Reps. Eliot Engel (D-Bronx) and Nita Lowey (D-Westchester) had similar concerns.

There are too many unanswered questions. Iran needs to be far more forthcoming before we are comfortable with this deal, Engel, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told CNN.

Said Lowey, Far too many details remain undetermined to ensure Congress and the American people that we are on track to permanently and verifiably prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile Sen. Charles Schumer, the leading contender to replace the retiring Harry Reid as Senate Democratic minority leader, ducked the issue Friday.

But some other top Democrats were quick to express misgivings.

I greet any deal with Iran with great skepticism, given its deceptive history and ongoing destabilizing and dangerous activities, said Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.).

Rep. Peter King (R-LI) said the deal would enrich Iran and that he was very, very skeptical that Iran would live up to its end of the bargain and that he sees no reason to trust Iran.
