Energizing voter turnout in this years election was on the minds of Marshall County Democrats when they met at Marysville City Building to reorganize and plan campaign strategies Saturday morning.

John Banister, Marysville, was elected county Democratic chairman, and he challenged his fellow party members to get started on the local level with a strong precinct committee structure and an appeal to younger voters.

The only way were going to win is with a grassroots effort, Banister said. Our first goal should be to fill in those committee posts.

Ashley Mason, rural Marysville, was elected precinct committeewoman from Franklin Township and vice chair of the county committee.

Others elected precinct committee members were Ed Taphorn, Franklin Township; Patrick ONeal, Guittard Township; Mike Ring and Mony Walstrom, Marysville Township; Linda Swim, Oketo Township; Lyle Howell and Ann Howell, Wells Township; Banister, Marysville City Ward 1; Jim Breeding and Gloria Breeding, Marysville City Ward 3; and Lona Dittmar, Marysville City Ward 4.

Committee members who were already elected to committee posts were Jack Haller and Maxine Haller, Blue Rapids City Township; Charles A. Ring Jr., Oketo Township; Kenneth Burger and Phyllis Burger, St. Bridget Township; Kenneth Hiltgen, Vermillion Township East; Marvin Turner and Susan Turner, Marysville City Ward 2; and Mick Keating, Marysville City Ward 4.

Thirty-nine committee positions are still open.

Matt Otte, chairman of the Mitchell County Democratic Committee, conducted the meeting until Banister was elected and took over the chair. Helping to organize the meeting were Mary Lou Davis and Greg Davis of Topeka, both natives of Marshall County. Gregs mother, Dorothy Davis, was a longtime treasurer of the county Democratic Committee.

Linda Seufert, Democratic chair of the 2nd Congressional District, attended the meeting and spoke briefly.

A count of registrants eligible to vote in Marshall County shows that, as of last September, there were 3,270 Republicans, 1,619 unaffiliated, 1,580 Democrats and 24 Libertarians.
