Nick Clegg changes outfit four times in a day, but plumps for scruffy shirt and trousers for conference address

Throughout the day the deputy Prime Minister had no fewer than three more outfit changes.

Hours after appearing on the BBC, Sky and other media outlets the Liberal Democrat leader appeared at a school in Bearsden, Glasgow in a dress-downed look.

Wearing a button down blue shirt with dark buttons and a fashionable blue detail on the inside of his colour he greeted school children and took part in a cooking lesson.

Although the focus of the visit was supposed to be on the Liberal Democrat leader's free school meals programme debate leapt immediately to his trousers.

It was unclear whether the deputy Prime Minister's battered dark blue pair were jeans or chinos and Mr Clegg himself confirmed that he did not know which type of trousers he was wearing.

Hours later Mr Clegg appeared on stage in a subtly different pair of blue trousers, identifiable as a new pair only by the different style of pockets. He had also changed into another, darker, open necked shirt.

The Liberal Democrat leader was joined at the Glasgow school by his wife Miriam who wore a red silk blouse, skinny black trousers and a pair of simple black court shoes.

Casual dressing is becoming something of a theme at the Liberal Democrat conference with senior figures appearing to be competing for who can put together scruffy look before they take to the podium in Glasgow.

Yesterday Danny Alexander wore no tie, open necked shirt and no jacket. the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, even tried out some new contact lenses for his speech on the economy.

This morning, Tim Farron, the party's president chose a similar look for a debate on housing.
