HELENA Democrat John Lewis and Republican Ryan Zinke are crisscrossing Montana in the final days before the election Tuesday in their race for an open seat in the House.

After five debates and millions of dollars spent on advertising, both candidates are trying to close the deal with voters in the waning days of the campaign.

Libertarian Mike Fellows of Missoula is also running.

Lewis said Friday hes in the midst of a 17-stop, multiday Democratic Party get-out-the-vote tour, joined by Democratic statewide elected officials and Senate candidate Amanda Curtis. Hes speaking to crowds at various events.

Im telling them that we have given this everything weve got, and weve put ourselves into a position to do something that hasnt been done in 20 years through hard work, Lewis said.

He was referring to the fact that in 1994, former Rep. Pat Williams was the last Democrat to win election to the states lone House seat.

Here we are with a few days left, and weve got to keep doing the things were doing and know how to do, and thats getting people to the polls, Lewis said, making his first run for office.

Lewis, 36, lives in Helena and worked until last year for Sen. Max Baucus for 12 years, including as his state director. He won the two-way House Democratic primary in June.

Zinke, meanwhile, is traveling across the state in his campaign bus, joining up with Daines at some events. He has coffee with voters in the morning, lunch with supporters and meets with others at various events.

People, and deservedly so, want to see me, and I want to see them, he said. Thats what so special about Montana. A lot of time its eye-to-eye. People have a chance to meet the candidate, shake hands, sometime they agree with you, sometimes they dont.
