Democrat Senate leader Harry Reid injured in freak exercise accident

"Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene. His doctors expect a full recovery," his office said.

As Democrat leader in the Senate he has been a key ally of President Barack Obama, especially over health reform and the economic stimulus bill.

With the Democrats losing their majority in the midterm elections Mr Reid, as minority leader, faces a far tougher time over the next two years trying to hold the resurgent Republicans at bay.

Born in poverty and raised in a home with no indoor plumbing, Mr Reids ascent to become one of the Senates most respected members has been impressive.

A former police officer, he worked his way through law school, to become first a city attorney before becoming a member of the Nevada State Assembly, where he made his name cleaning up the local casino industry.

In 2013 Senator Reid received hospital treatment for exhaustion, a year after suffering minor injuries in a car crash.

Previously, in 2005 he suffered a minor stroke, but has continued to exercise and still cuts a sprightly figure.

Senator Reid is not the only senior American politician to be hurt while trying to keep fit.

President Barack Obama suffered a split lip while playing basketball.

George W Bush suffered minor cuts and bruises after trying to leap out of the way of a rubbish truck while jogging during his time as Texas governor.
