Hoping to regain ground with female voters in Virginias 10th congressional district, Democrat John Foust appeared Thursday with several women leaders to attack Republican Barbara Comstock for her positions on abortion and equal pay in the work place.

Barbara Comstocks position on womens health and rights are completely out of touch with voters here in Northern Virginia, Foust, Fairfax County Supervisor, said. He stood with Virginia state Sen. Barbara Favola, former Fairfax County board of supervisors chair Kate Hanley and several other female Democratic leaders, at an event in McLean.

She is telling us time and again that government should interfere in a womans personal and private health-care decisions, Favola (Arlington) added, citing the support by Del. Comstock (Fairfax) for a bill that, before it was amended, would have required a woman seeking an abortion to first undergo a transvaginal ultrasound.

Though planned in advance, the appearance came a day after Comstocks campaign again characterized Foust as a sexist for suggesting in August that she had never held a real job.

The leaders pounced on that accusation, calling it a cynical ploy to divert attention from Comstocks record on womens issues. They re-asserted Fousts explanation that his comments were meant as a criticism of Comstocks career as a Washington lobbyist. They also accused her of killing jobs in Northern Virginia by supporting the Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) law that forces abortion clinics to make zoning-related upgrades or face being closed.

Barbara Comstock has a wonderful way of turning what you say into something you didnt say, said Kathleen Murphy, who narrowly lost an often-bitter state delegates race for Comstocks 34th district last year.

After being attacked in that race for allegedly lying to cancer patients, Murphy added, I completely ignore everything she says.

With less than 20 days to go before the Nov. 4 election, exchanges between the two sides have become increasingly heated.

The Comstock campaign responded by called Foust sexist and dishonest about Comstocks position on equal pay, saying she supports workplace parity.

This simply is not an issue where there is any difference of opinion and Mr. Fousts repeated dishonest attacks on Delegate Comstock are becoming unseemly and more desperate, campaign spokeswoman Johanna Persing said, in an e-mailed statement.
