So it was an obvious choice for the former Sydney lord mayor to become the first female patron of the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (M.A.D.E).

Ms Hughes Turnbull, who is the wife of federal Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull, was in Ballarat on Friday to view the museum firsthand.

I was honoured and delighted to be asked to be a patron, Ms Hughes Turnbull said.

Anybody interested in Australian history would know that Eureka was a singular moment in our pathway to becoming a representative democracy.

Ordinary people were standing up (against) for what was unjust.

It was a terrible, despotic system of government and it was wonderful people stood up against that.
