Russian court brands Pussy Riot video "extremist"
http://www.euronews.com A Russian court has ruled video footage of punk group Pussy Riot is "extremist" and called for it to be removed from websites. The decision was based on conclusions by a panel of experts who studied a film which shows the controversial band protesting back in February against President Vladimir Putin in Russia #39;s largest Orthodox church, Christ the Saviour Cathedral. Three of the group #39;s members were jailed for two years in August after being convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. Explaining her ruling the judge said the video used words and displayed actions which humiliate various social groups based on their religion. But one Pussy Riot member, freed on appeal after her sentence was suspended, described the verdict as blatant censorship: "This is censorship of art, censorship of culture, of protest culture which is very important for any country, let alone Russia," said Yekaterina Samutsevich. The protest angered many Russian Orthodox Christians but Putin has been widely criticised across Europe and the US over sentences seen as disproportionate.
