Word on the Street: 17th District in need of additional debates

Last week, word came down that the hotly contested 17th Congressional District would feature at least one televised debate between the candidates, incumbent Rep. Bobby Schilling and challenger Cheri Bustos.

Of course, it would air only in the Quad Cities - home base for Schilling, a Colona Republican, and Bustos, an East Moline Democrat.

Back when the two camps began to discuss debates in the press, we had pressed them over whether they were looking at holding other face-offs throughout the sprawling district that runs from central Illinois to the Wisconsin border north of Rockford. After all, there's a whole lot of new territory there that has never been in the 17th - including the southern half of Peoria, roughly below War Memorial Drive, and almost all of the Tazewell County communities bordering the Illinois River.

They'd indicated a willingness to consider debating on TV in the Peoria media market at the time. But when the campaigns met to discuss debates, they came away agreeing - at least initially - on only the one.

That led us to ask again: What about Peoria?

Bustos' campaign manager, Allison Jaslow, was involved in the debate negotiations for her side and reiterated her interest in holding debates around the district. So, too, did Schilling's campaign manager and son, Terry - who added that only the Quad Cities showdown was on the books because they hadn't gotten other offers yet from stations elsewhere.

Except it turns out that at least one local broadcaster is interested. WTVP Channel 47 extended an offer last month to both campaigns to meet up here.

"There's been some expression of interest, but no commitment yet," station manager Chet Tomczyk said of the debate that would be set for late October or very early November. He does have commitments, though, from their sister public television station in the Quad Cities, as well as from WCBU and the public radio station in the Quad Cities to simulcast any debate here.

That would make the debate similar to the one WTVP hosted in the Democratic primary and give more people a chance to evaluate the candidates - something particularly important around here because, as Tomczyk says, "We've got candidates who aren't from around the area, who aren't familiar with this area, and this area isn't familiar with them."

Here's hoping we get to see the candidates debate in one of the larger communities the victor will end up representing. (C.K.)

Anna didn't keep his word to the govt: Khurshid

Video

Union Law Minister Salman Khurshid has revealed that anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare had, at their meeting last month, agreed to publicly endorse efforts taken by the government to bring in a strong Lokpal Bill.

Speaking to Karan Thapar on Devil's Advocate, the Law Minister, however, added that it was clear that Hazare had not kept his word.

Below is an edited transcript of the excerpt from the interview:

Karan Thapar: What did you and Anna Hazare discuss during those two hours?

Salman Khurshid: I asked him what he was looking for. He said three things, that we said to you... Those three things are that there should be a Lokpal and a Lokayukta as well, so that states also get covered. All civil servants must get covered, meaning group A, group B, C and D. Initially we had wanted only groups A and B because we thought the Lokpal would become unwieldy with larger number of employees... and finally, that there should be a citizen's charter and grievances redressal forum and I said to him, we have already done this. I explained to him how.

Karan Thapar: What did he say?

Salman Khurshid: He said if that's the case, just write to us and say so.

Karan Thapar: According to what you have told Tehelka magazine, you apparently said that Anna said that when he received the final letter, he would hold a press conference and publicly say he was in agreement with the way the government had handled the Lokpal.

Salman Khurshid: Yes.

Va. Tech chapel changes wording on marriage paperwork

BLACKSBURG, Va. (WTVR)Virginia Tech has added a new word when it comes to describing who is getting married on its campus.

Virginia Tech says this is not a big deal, but others disagree.

The Virginia Tech Chapel serves as a site for weddings, recitals and memorials, completely under the direction of the university.

Since its construction the chapel has acknowledged on paper only heterosexual weddings. That quietly changed a few weeks ago.

Lets just get specific, the War Memorial Chapel has added a box on the form for the use of the facility that used to say bride and groom, now it says bride, groom, or spouse. Not everyone wants to be referred to as a bride or a groom, Larry Hincker, associate vice president of university relations said.

Virginia Tech sends out press releases nearly every day on various stories, but said nothing about this one. The explanation: Now come on Orlando, were not going to put out a press release for a change on a form.

But that one word spouse is understood to mean gays and lesbians one word on a form.

ECB rates unchanged; markets await word on bonds

The Associated Press

FILE - In this May 31, 2012 file picture President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi reports to the Economic Committee, in capacity as the head of the European Systemic Risk Board, at the European Parliament in Brussels. European Central Bank president Mario Draghi has already taken Europe's monetary authority into uncharted territory. Now, with the debt crisis in Europe threatening further disaster, he may have to push it even farther into the unknown to save the euro. The 17 countries that use the euro are struggling as economies across the region face deepening recessions. Spain and Italy, the two chief trouble spots, are threatened with a financial collapse that could tear the 13-year old currency union apart and rock the global economy. (AP Photo/Yves Logghe,File)

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) The European Central Bank leaves its benchmark interest rate unchanged at a record-low 0.75 percent.

Markets are now waiting to hear bank President Mario Draghi speak at a news conference, hoping for more signals on whether the bank might buy government bonds in the open market. That could lower borrowing costs that are threatening to push Italy and Spain over the edge.

Draghi last week raised expectations the bank might take stronger action by saying the ECB would do "whatever it takes" to save the euro. But he didn't specify what measures he would take.

Markets are looking to the ECB Thursday, a day after the U.S. Federal Reserve held off taking further steps to support the shaky U.S. recovery. But the Fed strongly hinted it might take action soon.
