Poet Laureate Trethewey Is a Cheerleader for the Written Word

As U.S. poet laureate, the 46-year-old describes herself as a "cheerleader" for the written word. She chooses the label deliberately, not only because she was head cheerleader at the University of Georgia in the late 1980s (Big hair! Big smile!), but also because, as a younger laureate, she wants to bring a sense of energy to the position.

"I want to ask ordinary people if poetry can mean something to them," Trethewey told The Associated Press during an interview at Delta State University in Cleveland, Miss.

"When kids look at broccoli they call it little trees,' because they see it not just for the word broccoli.' They see it for what it looks like, the image," Trethewey said. "We, as adults, forget to think like that. We forget to think figuratively and have to be reminded."

The librarian of Congress, James Billington, named Trethewey as the nation's 19th poet laureate in June, and she began the one-year position in September. She has already given speeches and public readings in Washington, D.C., and in two states where she grew up, Mississippi and Georgia.

Many of her poems explore the interplay of race, memory and history.

Trethewey, whose late mother was black and whose father is white, was born in Gulfport, Miss., in 1966, when their interracial marriage was against the law in the state. (A 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that originated in Virginia struck down such bans nationwide.) Her parents divorced when she was young.

Trethewey's latest collection, "Thrall," was released in late summer. Some poems explore her complex relationship with her father, Eric Trethewey, who's also a poet. Many were inspired by 18th Century "casta" paintings by Spanish artists, which catalogued the complex system of labels that society gave to children of mixed-race relationships in Mexico and other parts of the new world:

Press regulation: Lessons from Denmark?

24 November 2012 Last updated at 18:50 ET By Nick Higham BBC News

As Lord Justice Leveson puts the finishing touches to his recommendations for a new method of regulating the press in Britain, could the Danish model of so-called co-regulation be an option for the UK?

It is many British newspapers' worst nightmare: A system where complaints from readers are handled by a press council set up by Act of Parliament, whose members are government-appointed, and which has the power to demand that erring titles be fined.

How can you possibly have that kind of government oversight and a free press?

Yet that's exactly what they have in Denmark, a fully functioning democracy which values press freedom highly.

What's more, Danish newspapers have enthusiastically embraced the system - while some Danish MPs say that, however draconian it may sound by British standards, it still isn't tough enough.

Britain's existing Press Complaints Commission, set up, financed and run by the newspaper industry, is due to be wound up.

The question Lord Justice Leveson is pondering is what should replace it.

The Danish Press Council was formed in 1991 and oversees journalism, not just in newspapers but on Danish TV and radio and, increasingly, in online media.

Half its members are drawn from broadcasting, newspapers, and journalism trade unions; the rest are independent.

RAW VISION: Prime Minister Julia Gillard again addresses her role in setting up an alleged union slush fund 17 years ago.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has hit back at union "bagman" Ralph Blewitt over his claims she has questions to answer over the AWU affair, saying that people could work out whether they believed her or a self-confessed fraudster described by associates as a ''sexist pig'', ''imbecile'' and ''crook''.

Its going to come down to Mr Blewitts word against mine, Ms Gillard said, before noting that Mr Blewitt had admitted he had been involved in fraud, used prostitutes in Asia, sought immunity from prosecution and had been described as a sexist pig and an imbecile.

You can work out who you believe, she said.

In her second marathon press conference on the AWU affair, Ms Gillard on Monday further addressed questions about the events of 17 years ago when she worked as an industrial lawyer at Slater & Gordon in Melbourne - once more again stressing she had done nothing wrong.

Just before question time, the Prime Minister said that she did not report fraud carried out by her then boyfriend Bruce Wilson to the police or the union in 1995 because she did not know about it.
