Mom gets pickle co. to drop "midget" from jars

CRANSTON, R.I. A Cranston mother of a daughter with dwarfism has persuaded a Minnesota food company to drop the word "midget" from a line of pickles.

The Providence Journal reports that Chelley Martinka, who says she has craved pickles, said she was incensed when she saw jars of what Cains brand calls kosher dill midgets at a supermarket.

Adelaide

The mother of 10-month-old Adelaide, who has dwarfism, thought she would smash the jars. Instead, she took pictures and blogged.

Gedney Foods in Chaska, Minn., which produces pickles and food lines by Del Monte and Cains, says it will change its labels and stop using the word "midget."

The company did not return calls from the newspaper. It confirmed its decision, but said it does not want media attention or recognition for doing what's right.

In a blog post about the decision, Martinka said the company's president said "that the person or people who named the pickles never meant harm, it was just a word when the marketing was done for the pickles. He agreed that in these times that same word is offensive, and he and the company would never want to offend anyone."

Martinka also said in her blog that there were other pickle companies still using the word "midget," and that she intended to work on them too.

N.S. town awaits word on fate of 5 missing fishermen

CTVNews.ca Staff Published Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 11:53AM EST Last Updated Monday, Feb. 18, 2013 10:50PM EST

A small Nova Scotia community is hoping ramped up search efforts will recover five fishermen whose boat went missing off the south coast.

Search efforts continued into the night for the 13-metre boat named Miss Ally that went missing Sunday.

A navy spokesman said a distress call was sent out at 11 p.m. Sunday. The five men were said to be fishing for halibut.

Two Canadian Coast Guard vessels and a Royal Canadian Air Force helicopter were searching the area Monday where the ship went under, about 120 kilometres off the coast of Liverpool, N.S., Lt. Peter Ryan said.

Earlier Monday, a U.S. Coast Guard jet reported seeing a life-raft, but the raft was not found.

Stormy weather conditions were hampering the search efforts.

The weather out there was very poor, low visibility and high winds and very challenging seas, Ryan told The Canadian Press.

Two military aircraft could also join the search, search spokesperson Cpt. Doug Keirstead said.

Meanwhile, friends of the fishermen said if anyone could survive the harsh weather conditions, it would be them.

Word war further heats up between Lim, Domagoso

PNP defends men who carried out arrests By Erika Sauler, Marlon Ramos, Tarra Quismundo Philippine Daily Inquirer

Accusations and counteraccusations flew fast and thick Monday between former political allies turned bitter rivals Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim and Vice Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso as each held a press conference to denounce the other and defend himself.

Lim called Domagoso a drama king and urged him to stop the lies and politicking while the latter accused him of sending threatening text messages to his wife.

Even Chief Insp. Ed Moratathe head of the Blumentritt police community precinct whose members arrested Domagoso and four councilors for illegal gamblingjoined the fray.

In an interview over Radyo Inquirer 990 AM, Morata claimed that former President Joseph Estrada, Domagosos running mate under the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA), bullied him at the city prosecutors office.

The continuing word war stemmed from the arrest of Domagoso, Councilors Joel Chua, Ma. Asuncion Re Fugoso, Ernesto Jong Isip Jr. and Yul Servo Nieto and former councilor Manuel Zarcal over a bingo game they sponsored on Saturday on Tambunting Street in the Sta. Cruz area on Saturday. The five are among UNAs candidates for city councilors.

Domagoso, who was accused of daring Morata and Manila Police District Station 3 commander Supt. Ricardo Layug to arrest him, cried harassment and claimed that the policemen were Lims lapdogs. He maintained that bingo was not a form of illegal gambling as he revealed that following his arrest, his wife has been receiving threatening text messages from an anonymous sender.

At the same time, he said his group would file in the Office of Ombudsman criminal charges of abuse of authority and assault on a person of authority against the police officials who took them into custody.

Asserting that his group was arrested illegally and forcibly, Domogoso said these policemen would also be charged administratively in the National Police Commission.

Out of 200 people, only six of us were arrested and their accusation was [a violation] of Presidential Decree 1602 (antiillegal gambling law). But they thought of the charges only nine and a half hours after our arrest, he told reporters.
