Doing Engineering Research Work? Stay Away from Wikipedia – GineersNow (press release) (registration) (blog)

Its an academic sin if you quote anything from Wikipedia.

Weve all committed this sin with our research work: we put Wikipedia as a legitimate citation. Yup, thats a sin now.

It doesnt matter if a Wikipedia article is the first article that turns up in your web search. I dont blame you for that. But that doesnt mean that everything you read in that online encyclopedia is valid, because newsflash: most contents there are user-submitted.

While Wikipedia has their own editors to regulate content, that fact doesnt remove the questionablecredibility of the site. Not everyone who submits to the site have correct and verified information, and some of it may just be a figment of imagination. Not all are counter-checked by the editors given the imbalanced editor to content ratio.

In an article entitled Ten Things You May Not Know About Wikipedia, which is published by no less than Wikipedia themselves, they say that they care deeply about the quality of their work. But the thousands of articles in their website just do not match to the little their editors can do. There will always be content that will pass as factoids without a second thought.

The same article mentions about the team behind Wikipedia not really expecting for people to trust them. This is good that they admit to the rubbish articles they publish. They warn in this portion to not use Wikipedia to make critical decisions, and that includes putting their work in your data gathering. Do yourself a favor and stop citing Wikipedia as a reference for research work. Wikipedia said it implicitly themselves.

Wikipedia is not entirely a collection of articles that are founded on personal truths. One of the ten things to know about Wikipedia, perhaps one of the less convincing, is that they also do articles with the highest quality of scholarship. Editors also do their work that is comparable to Encyclopedia Brittanica. Its just that in Wikipedia, you will need to have accompanying links to support your facts but that feature also fails.

Uhm, not really. Source: Giphy

The point is to never trust Wikipedia for information until you get to verify them more than twice with external links, maybe even with books and journals. If you do actual research and theres but one result that showed and it lead you to Wikipedia, the odds are that the one you are looking for is not true.

Yes, were all glad Wikipedia content is free, but too bad that it is also that free.

Jeremy Corbyn appears as Boy Better Know member on Wikipedia after ‘Grime 4 Corbyn’ campaign – The Independent

Jeremy Corbyn has appeared on the Boy Better Know Wikipedia page following the launch of a 'Grime4Corbyn' campaign.

The Labour leader was listed as a founder member of the grime collective alongside Skepta and Jme, and as a "current artist".

The Labour manifesto also appeared on the BBK discography alongside Wiley's album Godfatherand Skepta's Mercury Prize-winningKonnichiwa.

The 'Grime 4 Corbyn' website urges people to register to vote and features a Soundcloud embed for the track 'Corbyn Riddim', which was produced by DA.

People who register to vote will apparently be eligible to win a pair of tickets to a secret party in London - with a date and venue TBC.

Following the launch of the campaign, the hashtag #grime4corbyn was one of the top trends on Twitter in the UK at the time of writing.

Corbyn recently met with Jme to discuss the forthcoming general election, where the BBK co-founder (Jme, not Corbyn), urged young people to register to vote.

Taking over Corbyn's Snapchat he said: "Hi, it's Jme, Boy Better Know. I'm on Jeremy's Snapchat to make sure you register to vote."

The pair spoke about music, education and art, and Jme explained why he felt that "bare of us don't vote" in UK politics.

Jme is one of severalartists who have urged their fansto get involved in the general election - others include Stormzy,AJ Tracey, Akala and Novelist.

Akala wrote a detailed post on his Facebook page where he admitted that, while he had never voted in a general election before, he would be voting Labour in support of Corbyn.

"I am not a Labour supporter," he wrote."I do not share the romanticism of many that the Labour party was ever as radical an alternative as some would like to think.

"Labour despite building the welfare state/NHS - has been an imperialist party from Atlee to Wilson to Blair, thus for a third world internationalist such as myself I have never been able to cast a vote for them. In truth my politics are closer at present to the Green party, of the options available."

"So why will I be voting now?" he continued. "The answer will surprise none of you, Jeremy Corbyn. Its not that I am nave enough to believe that one man (who is of course powerless without the people that support him) can fundamentally alter the nature of British politics, or that I think that if he/Labour win that the UK will suddenly reflect his personal political convictions, or even that I believe that the prime minister actually runs the country.

"I also recognize that Mr. Corbyn is a human and as such is an imperfect leader. He was abysmal during the Brexit campaign for example and this whole sense that a left wing exit from the EU was possible via a campaign led by anti-immigrant fervor is to my mind ridiculous. It seems around this issue Corbyn was more committed to an ideology than reality and how that reality would affect real people. He is a politician, he will make more mistakes, or at least what I deem to be mistakes."

Team India abused on Champions Trophy 2017 Wikipedia page – DunyaNews Pakistan

The Indian team was labeled with indecent and inappropriate names under the Group B matches

WEB DESK Something out of the ordinary happened when an anonymous person changed the data on the Wikipedia page of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017.

It is usual when a Wikipedia page is edited by some random person over the Internet while at the same time causing widespread anger and misconceptions or even laughter in some cases.

The Indian team is the current champion of ICC Champions Trophy and will fly to United Kingdom to defend the title soon after the ongoing IPL that is going to conclude on May 21.

However, things turned ugly for the team before the start of the Champions Trophy campaign when an anonymous person altered the data on the Wikipedia page of the mega event.

The Indian team was labeled with indecent and inappropriate names under the Group B matches schedule on the Wiki page.

The recent move caused an outage over the internet as diehards dubbed it as a cheap tactic to defame Team India.

Exeter City left-back Craig Woodman has Wikipedia page edited in humorous way – Devon Live

Comments(0)

Exeter City defender Craig Woodman has often made the headlines this season, arguably being one of the club's most important players, and his praise has lead to a slight change on his Wikipedia page.

Back in December, Grecians boss Paul Tisdale compared the 34-year-old to the German legend Franz Beckenbauer, which made headlines worldwide. Now, Woodman's name on Wikipedia has been amended to "Craig Beckenbauer Woodman".

As well as this name change, under his Exeter City career profile, a line reads "He fired a worldy against Scunthorpe at the end of the 2013-14 season to knock the Irons off their perch (even though they won League 2.)"

The comparison came after City's 3-1 win at Cheltenham just before Christmas. After the match, Tisdale said: "Craig Woodman is playing like Beckenbauer at the minute he's just unbelievable at the moment, I don't know what's happened, but I think he could play with a broken arm he's that good."

The left-back returned to action on Sunday night as he started City's 3-3 thrilling draw at Carlisle United, after suffering a broken arm back in March.

Tisdale admitted that the left-back is now a doubt for the second leg after sustaining a knock in the game.

He said: "Craig hasn't played a game for a while so he was challenged a fair bit physically and then he got a nasty knock just before he came off, so how that will affect him now going forward I don't know.

"We'll have to assess that on Monday and Tuesday."
