Dallas-area candidates expected to swing Texas Senate further right
The GOP-controlled Texas Senate is expected to tilt further to the right after the November election, thanks to a new group of senators backed by tea party groups including three from North Texas.
Republicans have been in charge of the Senate for more than 15 years and have passed fairly conservative legislation in recent sessions on spending and social issues. But political experts expect the conservative agenda in the upper chamber to get more ambitious in 2015, when the Legislature reconvenes.
Bills to authorize private school tax credits, allow concealed handguns on college campuses and ban city policies that prevent police from asking those they stop about immigration status measures stymied in the past all are likely to have better prospects in the new Senate.
The three new GOP senators expected to represent the Dallas area are Van Taylor of Plano, Don Huffines of Dallas and Bob Hall of Edgewood. None has a Democratic opponent this fall, although Taylor and Hall are being challenged by Libertarian candidates in the general election.
If, as expected, Republican Dan Patrick wins his race against Democrat Leticia Van de Putte to become lieutenant governor, tea party influence in the Senate will be at an all-time high.
Theres no doubt that the Senate will be a more conservative body, said former Lt. Gov. Bill Ratliff, a Republican who also served as a senator representing northeast Texas for several years.
The big question is how far they will go and what impact that has on the House, he added, pointing to the continued leadership of Republican House Speaker Joe Straus of San Antonio, who has not been a favorite of key tea party groups.
Huffines and Hall defeated two longtime Republican senators, John Carona and Bob Deuell, in Republican primaries, while Taylor is replacing Sen. Ken Paxton of McKinney, who is running for attorney general.
Theyll be joined by other new senators who touted tea party support in their campaigns this year including Republicans Brandon Creighton of Conroe and Charles Perry of Lubbock, who recently won special elections to unexpired terms.
We will show the rest of the country what it means to be conservative, Patrick said earlier this year, predicting that he would be joined by several like-minded Republicans when the new Senate comes into office in January.
