PM Modi hosts tea party for NDA MPs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday hosted a tea party for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Members of Parliament (MPs) at his official 7, Race Course Road (RCR) residence here.

The NDA lawmakers were given presentations on the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana and Jan Dhan Yojana during the tea party.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) veterans Lal Krishna Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, BJP president Amit Shah and Cabinet Ministers Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj, M. Venkaiah Naidu, Dr Harsh Vardhan and Ram Vilas Paswan were among those present on the occasion, which marked the first interaction Prime Minister Modi had with the NDA MPs since his government took charge at the Centre in May this year.

"It was a successful get-together. Presentations were given by Nitin Gadkari and Arun Jaitley. Prime Minister Modi talked about cleanliness drive and a gamut of issues, and how MPs can play a major role in bringing change," BJP general secretary Rajiv Pratap Rudy told the media.

The tea party took place just days after the BJP's splendid performance in the assembly polls in Haryana and Maharashtra. It was also seen as an attempt by the BJP to reach out to ally Shiv Sena for the formation of the state government in Maharashtra. Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray was, however, not present at the tea party.

The BJP and Shiv Sena broke their 25-year old alliance ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly polls over seats sharing.

The BJP has emerged as the single-largest party in Maharashtra winning 122 of the 288 seats. The Shiv Sena finished second with 63 seats.

The BJP has, however, not yet revealed its cards despite Sharad Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) offering to extend it outside support to form the government in the state. (ANI)

Maharashtra: Shiv Sena MPs at PM Modi's tea party indicates possible patch-up for government formation

NEW DELHI: After a bitter parting of ways in the run-up to the Maharashtra polls, presence of Shiv Sena MPs at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tea party on Sunday indicated that the estranged saffron allies are well on track to repair the rift ahead of government formation in the state.

All Shiv Sena MPs, including Union heavy industries minister Anant Geete, attended the 'Diwali Milan' get- together.

The development was significant as it showed that the Sena has mellowed down and BJP, despite being on a strong wicket, decided to show flexibility after having proved the point as to who was the bigger partner in the saffron alliance and the biggest anti-Congress force.

Talking to TV channels before going for the tea party, Geete echoed the new conciliatory tone of his party. He stressed the Sena is part of the NDA.

Soon after the tea party, BJP leaders in Mumbai announced the party's willingness to bring the Sena into the alliance, dropping hints of a possible tie-up.

"BJP wants to bring Shiv Sena into alliance and form Maharashtra government," state BJP leader Vinod Tawde said while announcing that the final decision will be taken only after a meeting of the Maharashtra BJP legislature party on Tuesday.

Tawde's statement came immediately after his meeting with Maharashtra BJP president Devendra Fadnavis over preparations for government formation.

The BJP legislature party meeting on Tuesday will also be attended by party observer Rajnath Singh and new in-charge of the party affairs in the state J P Nadda.

"No political discussions took place during the meeting. It was purely an official function," Geete told reporters after the tea party.

The BJP emerged as the single largest party, winning 122 seats in the recently held elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly. The party appears comfortable at this juncture as Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) - which won 41 seats has already offered it unconditional outside support.
