Democratic Party chair, Tea Party Patriots stand their ground over commercial

SAN ANTONIO - A prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance are usually how tea party gatherings begin, said George Rodriguez, the South Texas coordinator of the Tea Party Patriots.

But at a protest on the sidewalk outside KWEX-TV, Rodriguez said it was a way to show theyre not terrorists.

He said he and his membership disagree with a Spanish-language spot only airing on local Channel 41 that says armed militia groups on the border are terrorists aligned with the tea party.

Rodriguez said he doesnt blame Bexar County Democrats as a whole for buying the commercial time.

Its one of their leaders that has chosen the opportunity to smear us, Rodriguez said.

Rodriguez was referring to Manuel Medina, chair of the Bexar County Democratic Party, who said, They have a right to be upset but the truth of the matter is they dont own the truth.

At a rally outside party headquarters on Interstate 10, Medina referred to the images in the commercial of militia members in military garb, weapons in hand.

Tea Party icons urge conservative voters to turn out, help GOP take back the Senate

Several Tea Party icons, including Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), Representative Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Sarah Palin, and former Representative Allen West (R-FL), are urging Tea Party activists around the country to help Republicans take back the majority in the U.S. Senate in next weeks 2014 mid-term elections through a low budget but heart-felt social media campaign of personalized YouTube videos.

Dollar for dollar, these short YouTube pitches may end up being the most cost-effective assistance the Republican Party receives in the last week of the campaign. Targeted at the passionate Tea Party conservatives who powered the huge wave in the 2010 mid-terms that saw the Republicans take back a majority in the House of Representatives, the videos attempt to make the case that, despite four years of Republican establishment backsliding on the promises of the 2010 election, the future of the country depends on the outcome of the 2014 election.

These pitches, coming from Tea Party-aligned political leaders who enjoy high levels of trust with Tea Party activists around the country, are a timely boost for the Republican Party. Tea Party activists are not particularly enthused about the choices in the 2014 general election, whose marquis contest in the Kentucky U.S. Senate race will turn on whether Tea Party Republicans show up and vote for McConnell, nose-holding or not, as Sam Youngman at the Lexington Herald Leader reported.

With the losses of Tea Party-endorsed candidates in Republican primaries in Kentucky, Mississippi, Kansas, and Tennessee, Tea Party activists have no one left to cheer for. As a result, most consider this a hold your nose election where they are forced to vote for the least bad option, which in most cases is the moderate Republican, as opposed to the far left Democrat (in Kansas, the far left Democrat is listed on the ballot as an Independent).

The Tea Party icons in these videos are reminding the true believers in limited government that sometimes the best course of action is to hold your nose and vote for the least bad option, especially if one result of that vote will be the deposing of Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) as the majority leader of the U.S. Senate.

The low budget YouTube videos have an equally low budget distribution mechanism. Sources tell Breitbart News that several groups including Americans for Limited Government, Tea Party Patriots, and For America, a conservative 501 c 4 whose Facebook page has more than six million likes will be sending links out to these videos in their regular email messages.

Representative Louie Gohmerts video begins with the assertion that this is a country in trouble. Every Tea Party activist, he urges, should vote as if your country depends on it.

With less than a week until election day, these Tea Party icons are hoping that the anticipated small margin needed for victory by Republican candidates in several key swing states may come from Tea Party activists energized by their YouTube video pitches.

Did 'tea party' governors go too far? Voters are about to weigh in. (+video)

Washington In conservative Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback finds his job at risk because his tax cuts ate a big hole in state revenues. In Wisconsin, Gov. Scott Walker in trouble with voters for a conservative agenda that includes curbing the bargaining rights of public sector labor unions.

From Alaska to Michigan and Maine, other Republican governors also face tough battles for reelection.

This is true even though 2014 is shaping up as a great year for Republican candidates generally from Congress down through legislative seats in state capitals. The governors races stand out as an anomaly.

Did these leaders go too far with a tea party approach to governing? Tuesday's elections are, at least in part, a referendum on that question, even though these governors might not formally tag themselves with the tea party label.

Governors Walker and Brownback, like several other governors at risk, rode to power in 2010. That was the year the tea party movement took hold as a force in American politics as a backlash to recession, to President Obama, and to the bailout ethos of Washington policymakers.

In that year, the House of Representatives didnt just flip from Democratic to Republican control. The election also brought in a freshman class with conservatives who didnt blink an eye at tactics like allowing a government shutdown or refusing to raise the federal debt limit if it might help nudge the nation toward fiscal discipline.

The new class of governors carried a similar spirit into state-level politics, to varying degrees.

Its a style that can win some big political victories, but can also fuel opposition.

When Walker severely curbed the bargaining powers for public unions, he billed it as a necessary move to chart a sound fiscal course for the state. But protesters flocked to the state capitol and mounted a recall drive in an effort to oust the governor.

More recently, Walker was among a number of Republican governors who opted out of the expanded Medicaid enrollment provided through Obamacare a position that even some of his supporters have criticized. And Cosmopolitan magazine is among those who have editorialized against Walkers efforts to make it harder for women to get abortions.
