Texas Conservative Tea Party Coalition endorses $350 million Montgomery County road bond
The Texas Conservative Tea Party Coalition will endorse the May 9 $350 million bond referendum after hearing presentations from county and community officials during a board meeting Thursday.
While there is still division on the need of the 6-mile extension of Woodlands Parkway from FM 2978 to Texas 249, presenters agreed the passage of the bond is critical for Montgomery County.
I think everyone in this room agrees we absolutely have to pass the bond, there is no doubt about it, Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack said. Every single one of us traverse these roads every day, and it is unfathomable to be put in a position that there is a chance of the bond issue failing.
But unfortunately, one project has the potential to stop us in our tracks.
That project is the $22 million extension of the parkway, which is on the road bond project list for Precinct 2.
Former District 15 state Rep. Steve Toth said mobility issues in the county are critical, and a bond is needed to fund these projects.
Neither here nor there, we have to have a way to (address mobility), and it is going to include bond issuance, said Toth, adding that the $350 million is just a fraction of what is needed to address the countys road infrastructure problems.
However, Toth said he will not support the bond package with the Woodlands Parkway extension on it and that it should be removed with the money reallocated to other roads with more pressing needs.
County Judge Craig Doyal said the extension is needed and would provide better access to West Montgomery County.
There needs to be another east-west corridor, he said of the project that has been on the countys major thoroughfare plan for 30 years. This is an opportunity to allow traffic to get out of The Woodlands.
