IRS keeps Albuquerque Tea Party in limbo 5 years after tax-exempt status application

Before there were the lost Lerner emails, the congressional hearings and the retaliatory budget cuts, there was the Albuquerque Tea Party, a group of politically minded folks in New Mexico who wanted to get together and share ideas for taking back their country. The IRS had other ideas about them.

Five years after the Albuquerque Tea Party applied for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(4) of the tax code, they remain in limbo their application apparently no closer to being approved or denied than it was the day they mailed it to the IRS on Dec. 29, 2009.

They have watched as other groups have been approved in less time, and they say they are mystified as to why the application has been held up so long, after they provided hundreds of pages of evidence and documents that the IRS requested.

If the IRS, with its massive staff, read only 1/2 of a page daily of all the paperwork we have had to send them, they could have read it all three years ago, Rick Harbaugh, secretary of the board of the Albuquerque group, said in an email describing his groups five-year battle with the tax agency.

Worse yet, he said, they still dont know why they were targeted in the first place, and every explanation from the IRS that the targeting was by low-level employees in Ohio, for example has been wrong. Mr. Harbaugh said they have letters from the Treasury Department saying their file was being reviewed in Washington.

The targeting exploded onto front pages in May 2013 after Lois G. Lerner, head of a division charged with scrutinizing applications for tax-exempt status, planted a question at a law forum so she could break news of the activity.

She was trying to beat an inspector generals report due out a few days later, which said the IRS singled out hundreds of conservative and tea party groups for intrusive scrutiny and refused to approve those applications, which had piled up for years.

In the 20 months since, most groups whose applications were held up have been approved. They include the NE Tarrant Tea Party in Tarrant, Texas, which was approved in December after a four-year wait.

Julie McCarty, an official with NE Tarrant, said the organization learned about its approval from its attorney at the American Center for Law and Justice.

Borges re-elected to lead Ohio GOP

Published: Monday, 1/12/2015

BY TOM TROY BLADE POLITICS WRITER

COLUMBUS -- Auglaize County businessman James Dicke today defeated a Tea Party opponent for the position of Republican National Committeeman vacated by the death of former state GOP Chairman Bob Bennett, in a vote of the Ohio Republican state central committee.

And state party Chairman Matt Borges was elected a second two-year term with no opposition.

The state central committee is made up of 66 people - one woman and one man from each state Senate district, elected by local registered Republicans. The committee met at the Westin Columbus hotel just after the ceremonial swearing-in of Republican Gov. John Kasich. About 46 were present in person and a handful voted by telephone.

Mr. Dicke, 69, of New Bremen, is chairman and chief executive officer of Crown Equipment Corp., and is a major contributor to the Republican Party.

His opponent, Gary Burkholder of Licking County, was backed by Tea Party Republicans.

James Horton, a state committeeman from Delta, nominated Mr. Burkholder, but said he has confidence in Mr. Dicke as well.

"He was very kind. He is an extremely accomplished individual and I feel he should do a very good job," Mr. Horton said.

Mr. Dicke said, "I don't think there is any more conservative county in Ohio than Auglaize. We were Tea Party before there was a Tea Party."

*Sips Tea*: Mia Love Under Fire By Tea Party For Supporting John Boehner

Mia Love, the first black female Republican elected in Congress, is getting the side-eye from the Tea Party for voting to re-elect House Speaker John Boehner a move that ultra-conservatives, who have supported Love, are not too happy about.

This is Loves first vote since shes been sworn in as Utahs new GOP rep and critics, according to the Washington Post, are already wondering, How tea party is Mia Love?

Twenty-fiveof Boehners own party members refused to support his reelection as House Speaker. It was thebiggest revolt against a House Speaker in 150 years. Despite the Tea Party-pushed insurgency during Tuesdays vote, Boehner was seated for the third time as House Speaker.

Tea Party darling Love, however, didnt participate in the uprising and voted for Boehner. Cue the social media backlash from far-right conservatives:

If this is an example of how Mia Love will be in Congress, shell be done in 2 years. #disappointed, one tweeted, quoted by theWashington Post.

MIALOVE TRAITOR TO CONSERVATIVES FOR HER BOEHNER FOR SPEAKER VOTE! another exclaimed.

snake in the grass..MiaLove the darling of the Tea Party voted to keep Speaker John Boehner in office.another back stabbing rat..one quipped.

Mia Love, in an e-mail to the Washington Examiner, defended her vote for Boehner:

There were no qualified or notable campaigns for speaker within the Republican Party other than John Boehner. Casting a vote for a candidate who has not actively campaigned and does not have the support to be speaker is an indirect vote for Nancy Pelosi, and I will not vote for Nancy Pelosi. There will be a time and a place for me to stand as a lone voice of dissension, but the vote for the speaker, is not that place. For me to be an effective congressman over the next two years it is important for me to be on the side of the elected speaker.

Though she was endorsed by FreedomWorks, a national Tea Party group, in 2012 and supported by the Tea Party Express in 2014, Loves Tea Party values are being challenged.
