Partners: DC Networking Ugradation, SDN Will Drive Networking Market

By Amit Singh CRN, Nov 17, 2014

The enterprise networking market is expected to reach $1,054 million by 2017 with a major chunk accounted for by SDN

Wider acceptance of social networking, mobility, big data, analytics and the cloud (SMAC) is driving the networking market. According to Gartner, the enterprise networking market will touch $887 million in 2014 and reach $1,054 million by 2017.

Today, the point of discussion with customers is around technologies such as SDN, data center network upgradation, and the convergence of network and wireless. We believe these solutions and services will drive business in the next 12-18 months, says Umesh Shah, Director, Orient Technologies, Mumbai.

SDN Indian businesses are now accepting SDN as a serious investment option. Says Amandeep Singh Dang, Country Manager, Dell Networking, In India, we expect 30-40 percent of the enterprise networking market to move to SDN by 2017. This means an opportunity worth $350 million-$400 million by 2017.

Adds Neel Shah, Managing Director, Insight Business Machines, Mumbai, Although most customers are still testing the waters with partial implementation, the momentum will accelerate in the next 1-2 years. Greenfield projects will be more inclined to opt for full-fledged SDN.

Customers now understand that SDN will be the future and are readying the base for SDN transformation, he remarks. We have seen increased acceptance and executed several networking projects where customers have deployed SDN-ready products.

Revamp in data centers Another big transformation is taking place inside data centers. With cloud computing emerging as a widespread practice, the demands on network switches and routers inside data centers have increased.

When you consider Facebook has 1.35 billion monthly users, with a good many of those active in the U.S., perhaps it shouldnt come as a surprise that cops see the social networking service as a useful tool in the fight against crime.

Take recent events in L.A., for example, where a cop on desk duty hit the jackpot after searching on Facebook for one of the citys most wanted fugitives an alleged murderer who went on the run more than 10 years ago.

Eduardo Rodriguez, who stands accused of four homicides and two attempted homicides linked to street gang activity, was spotted by the eagle-eyed cop in photos posted on the social networking site by the fugitives family and friends.

Not surprisingly, Rodriguez had changed his identity, but the copwas pretty sure he had his man. A surveillance team was sent out to watch the premises identified in one of the photos, and sure enough, Rodriguez eventually appeared. Late last week, the suspect was arrested.

According to the L.A. Times, 35-year-old Rodriguez was picked up in Riverside, about 60 miles east of L.A., where he was living with a woman he was soon to marry. His fiance reportedly had no idea of his alleged criminal past, with neighbors also oblivious to the fact.

Its thought Rodriguez fled to Mexico in 2003 before returning to California around four years ago.

Facebook to take on LinkedIn, Google, Microsoft

You already use Facebook at work. Soon you'll be able to use Facebook at Work, a new spin on the social network that is intended for use at the office -- so you won't have to close your browser window when the boss walks by.

The site is intended to let users connect and chat with professional contacts, sift through an exclusively work-related newsfeed, and collaborate on documents, according to the Financial Times, which reported that the site is currently being tested by some companies.

Facebook at Work is a clear play at LinkedIn, the top networking site for professionals, and its document sharing and collaboration aspects also would put it in competition with Google Drive and chat, and Microsoft Office 365.

Facebook is typically not a work-friendly site. Profiles often contain information (and evidence) that you don't want a current or potential employer seeing. What's more, many offices block Facebook for fear that it diminishes productivity. (In fact, some research has shown that web surfing during the day may actually increase productivity.)

LinkedIn is, if you will, the Facebook of professional networking, with more than 332 million registered users worldwide. If Facebook wants to become the Facebook of professional networking, "they need a more professional sheen to get through that firewall," CNET editor Dan Ackerman told CBS News.

Facebook currently makes its money off advertising. In order to monetize the move, the company would have to create new revenue streams. LinkedIn reported revenue of $568 million in the third quarter of 2014, from job postings, premium subscriptions and marketing campaigns.

"If you can get people to buy professional accounts, that's really big. Obviously some sort of targeted advertising or promotions connected to this, that could be really big," said Ackerman. "And just keeping these people as customers, even if they can't use regular Facebook at work, could really be lucrative for them."
