Search for growth in social, mobile fuels tech M&A boom

The search for game-changing technology capable of fueling growth in an uncertain economy is driving global tech mergers and acquisitions to a level not seen since the dotcom era.

Whats more, tech M&A is likely to increase, according to data from EA, the global professional services company formerly known as Ernst & Young.

Tech M&A centered around online and mobile payments, social networking, gaming and e-commerce in the last quarter, according to a report out Thursday from EA. Much of the activity appears to be driven by a desire to acquire disruptive technology.

Historically, tech M&A was driven by major vendors like Hewlett-Packard, Oracle and IBM trying to expand their reach by acquiring companies to consolidate and build on established tech product families, said Jeff Liu, Global Technology Industry Transaction Advisory Services leader at EY.

Now its disruptive technology thats in the crosshairs, Liu said. Consolidation involves coporations needing to catch up in a way that they are not able to do fast enough orignaically.

The aggregate global value of all publicly disclosed-value deals set a new post-dotcom era quarterly high of US$73.7 billion [b], up 41 percent sequentially and 4 percent year over year. At 923 deals in total, overall volume also set a record for any quarter since 2000, rising 6 percent sequentially and 31 percent year over year.

Corporations, as opposed to private equity deals, continue to drive the growth, increasing aggregate value 40 percent sequentially and 9 percent year over year to $65.3 billion.

In EA global surveys of its clients, about 80 percent of respondents expected some sort of M&A to take place over the next four quarters, an all-time high for such polls, Liu said. This should translate into the current level of tech M&A rising by 25 percent, he said.

EA says there are five megatrends driving tech M&A: smart mobility, cloud computing, social networking, big data analytics and what it calls accelerated technology adaptation, defined as technology companies rapidly adapting to the needs of specific industries and other industries rapidly adapting to the evolving possibilities that technology enables.

Some of the biggest recent deals highlight these trends. For example, SAP in September said it it would buy business-travel and expense software vendor Concur for about US$8.3 billion, in a bid to continue growing out its portfolio of cloud-based applications. It was the largest deal of the quarter.

Social media facilities unhealthy comparisons

It is essential that college students minimize social networking sites every once and awhile to experience life without constantly staring down at a screen and simultaneously comparing themselves to essentially everyone they have ever known.

Social media undoubtedly has the powerful capability to connect old and new friends, family members and everyone in between together, but constant connection creates this enormous force of comparison and ultimately dissatisfaction.

Yet, it is really important to recognize the fact that social media is one-dimensional. Most people, particularly college students, are likely to only post or share the positive events in their lives, which, in turn, makes someones life, as it is portrayed through Instagram, Facebook or Twitter seem frankly perfect.

These event-/life-sharing sites are, therefore, unrealistic. Despite this disconnect from reality, it is not uncommon for someone to step away from social media for a minute and experience an overwhelming feeling of dissatisfaction. It is just quite easy to compare your life to your friends and peers and somehow feel like you could be doing so many better things in your life.

And that may be true, but you cant make your life better by scrolling through the photographic journals of others. Regardless of the fact that, yes, it does keep the world connected, it can become a very passive way of viewing life. Instead of doing, we may be caught up in looking at what others are doing, and when we actually are living or doing something noteworthy, we are worried about sharing our pictures to show the rest of the world that Hey look I am okay I do interesting things too!

We, college students, cannot spend some of the most vital years of our life glued to our social media accounts.

Yes, it is a great tool to stay connected and up to date but it is also just as important to step away sometimes and experience the refreshing feeling of a walk from class without scrolling through your Twitter or Instagram accounts.

It can feel quite peaceful. And you are more likely to feel content with your own individual life, because you are not constantly looking at the living of others.

It can feel great to just soak up the moment and not worry about taking a picture to show everybody else, if you want to take a picture, take it for yourself.

Do not worry about what anyone else might say or think about it. Put down your phone and take a social media hideous, you just might be surprised how happy you feel.
