Tumblr growing fast, Facebook lags behind

Friday, 28 November 2014 16:26

Tumblr is taking the lead as the fastest growing social media platform, leaving the former social media leader Facebook far behind.

Tumblr is a social networking website owned by Yahoo! Inc, the service allows users to post multimedia and other content in a short-blog form, which allows users to follow the blogs of others. As per the report, Facebook is witnessing a slowdown in growth of its active user-base. Tumblr, on the other hand, has emerged as the victor in terms of highest active user growth, followed by Pinterest and Instagram.

According to TheGuardian, Tumblr is the fastest growing social media site according to new research from GlobalWebIndex, which notes that its active users grew by 120% in the last six months. That put it ahead of Pinterest (with 111%) and Instagram (with 64%), although more matured social networks are seeing slower growth. Twitters active user total grew by 26% in the last six months, while Facebooks grew by just 2%.

Though, Facebook is facing a decline in terms of users, their other social networking app Facebook Messenger and Instagram are growing rapidly to gain the top spot.

Either people are getting bored with the biggest social networking site, or its simply crushing the device with its continuous updates. However, the current data recorded shows Facebooks growth has reached saturation while other social media services are recording continuous growth.

Social networks told to be honest and stop bamboozling their users

The UK parliament is calling on social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to simplify their terms and conditions. The Science and Technology Committee has expressed concern that privacy policies and other documents are strewn with legal terms that most people do not read or understand. This means that most social network users are simply not aware that they have agreed for their personal information to be used in various ways -- and are certainly unaware of how it might be used.

The Committee is calling for social networks to make a commitment to explain in very clear terms how personal data is shared and used. It wants to work with the government to draw up a set of standards -- almost a social networking manifesto -- that companies can sign up to.

Facebook has already put forward proposals to simplify its privacy policy in the hope that people will actually read them. But the committee believes there is still a lot of work to do, expressing concerns that these contracts are "not fit as a mechanism for demonstrating that users have given informed consent for some of the ways companies are now exploiting personal data". What many find particularly worrying is the trend for social networks to hang onto personal information that is not technically required to use the services.

Andrew Miller, chairman of the Science and Technology Committee, said:

Lets face it, most people click yes to terms and conditions contracts without reading them, because they are often laughably long and written in the kind of legalese you need a law degree from the USA to understand. Socially responsible companies wouldnt want to bamboozle their users, of course, so we are sure most social media developers will be happy to sign up to the new guidelines on clear communication and informed consent that we are asking the Government to draw up.

At the moment there is just talk of a voluntary code of conduct, but the committee says that it will consider legislation if necessary. As The Next Web points out, the majority of social networks targeted by this venture are based in the US and are covered by US law, meaning that it would be difficult to make the UK guidelines anything other than voluntary.

Former BJP ideologue Govindacharya challenges government's use of social media in Delhi HC

New Delhi: Former BJP ideologue KN Govindacharya has challenged the Government's use of Social media to disseminate information to the public. In a petition filed through his advocate Virag Gupta, he has argued that the public information of the government could be misused or used for commercial gains by the social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.

He told the court that the terms and conditions of the social networking sites of the agreement under which the government uses various social networking platforms are illegal. The terms and conditions state that the data could be used by these social networking sites for commercial gains, he has informed the court.

The court has asked the Centre to respond on how it can get into an agreement which allows data of the government to be used for commercial gains.

The Centre has four weeks to respond to the petitioner's doubts.

The Centre has four weeks to respond to the petitioner's doubts. The Center has told the Delhi HC that advisories regarding social media and email usage have been sent to all ministries and only the National Informatics Centre (NIC) or official emails can be used by the government officials for official purposes. It has explained that the Official social media platforms can also be used only through official nic email.

The government has also said that it has started charging service tax from social media sites since October 1. If any service provider is outside of India then service recipients will have to pay tax it said.
