Online social support may help you lose weight

By Charles Q. ChoiLivescience.comJanuary 28, 2015, 11:44 AM

People who are trying to lose weight may have more success in slimming down when they and their companions have more connections to others online, a new study suggests.

This finding suggests that social networks could help fight the obesity epidemic, researchers say.

In the study, scientists looked at 22,400 people taking part in a large, international online weight-management program. They focused on about 5,400 people who participated in the program for at least six months and who posted their weight loss progress at least twice during the study period.

The researchers found the most significant factor linked to weightloss was a person's level of social networking. After six months, people who did not have any friends in the online community saw a 4.1 percent decrease in their body weight, on average. On the other hand, those in clusters made up of two to nine friends experienced a 5.2 percent decrease in body weight. The people who were in the largest cluster of friends within the network, which was made up of nearly 1,500 members, saw a 6.8 percent decrease in body weight. Those who were deeply embedded in the social network -- who not only had a high number of friends, but also whose friends each also had a high number of friends -- experienced a 8.3 percent decrease in body weight.

Looking to lighten up? Pros say simple tricks help shed big pounds

"It makes sense that social connectedness is related to any goal people try to achieve," said lead study author Julia Poncela-Casasnovas, who researches social systems using computational methods at Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain. "It can be AA [Alcoholics Anonymous], or just joining a gym with friends, or quitting smoking. Any of these behavior-modifying endeavors are more likely to succeed if you have some kind of social support."

Poncela-Casasnovas added that, to help combat the obesity problem in the United States, an online weight control system could be easily implemented on a national level, at a much lower cost than current in-person approaches.

Obesity has become a global health crisis, with more than a half-billion obese adults worldwide. The obesity epidemic is heightening the risk of chronic illnesses globally, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. [Lose Weight Smartly: 7 Little-Known Tricks That Shave Pounds]

Mobile Ads Fuel Facebooks Growth, Again

Facebooks sales jumped nearly 50% in the latest quarter, fueled by growing ad revenue from more users connecting through their mobile phones, the company said Wednesday. Here are the key points from Facebooks fourth quarter earnings report.

What you need to know: The social networking giant continued to ride a strong mobile ad business to $3.85 billion in quarterly revenue an increase of 49% from $2.6 billion during the same quarter a year earlier. Facebooks quarterly profits totaled $701 million, or 25 cents per share, representing a 34% year-over-year increase.

Once again, Facebook got a bulk of its revenue from mobile ads as it surpassed analyst expectations of $3.7 billion in revenue. Facebooks sales have grown by about 60% in each of the previous two quarters with much of those gains attributed to mobile ads. Despite topping analysts forecasts, Facebooks fourth quarter saw the companys slowest rate of quarterly sales growth since early-2013 and the companys shares dipped slightly in after-hours trading.

The company also provided full-year financial results, showing a 58% bump in annual revenue, to $12.5 billion, and $2.9 billion in profits nearly double 2013s profits.

We got a lot done in 2014, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement. Our community continues to grow and were making progress towards connecting the world,

The big number: Facebook ended 2014 with 1.39 billion monthly active users (MAUs), which was up 13% from 2013. Mobile MAUs grew by 26% in 2014, to 1.19 billion.

Facebooks expanding mobile ad business, which has shown huge gains over the past couple of years, represented nearly 69% of the companys $3.6 billion in ad revenue. Ad sales were up 53% from last years fourth quarter, when mobile ads accounted for only 53% of overall ad revenue.

What you might have missed: In October, Facebooks tumbled slightly following the companys third-quarter earnings report after the company announced plans to dramatically increase the companys spending on hiring and acquisitions in 2015. In the fourth quarter, Facebook said, the companys capital expenditures rose 7%, to $517 million.
