Cyber stalking: University students’ pictures hacked, posted on social network with derogatory captions – The New Indian Express

BHUBANESWAR: In a case of breach of privacy on cyberspace, the Commissionerate Police here on Saturday received a complaint from students of Ramadevi Womens University that the photographs of at least 50 girls were used on a Facebook account with derogatory comments and captions.

The students alleged that one Aaroshi Creations, which had organised a virtual contest titled 'Best Display Picture on Facebook, used personal photographs of the girls without their consent. So far, six girls from the varsity have lodged complaints with the Saheed Nagar police. The police have registered a case under the Information Technology Act and relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The students came to know about the contest through a message on WhatsApp which was widely circulated in the university. However, one of the complainants said that none of the girls whose photographs were posted on the social networking page, had participated in the contest which was held on March 4.

We suspect that one of our acquaintances, who also figures in the Facebook friend list of Aarohi Creations, has shared our pictures with the miscreant. Several photos of the 'contest' and its winners were also posted on the same page later, but none of my friends had participated in it," a post-graduate student of Ramadevi University said.

The complainants charged the owner of Aarohi Creations and another woman of misutilising their personal photographs on the Internet. Inspector in charge of Sahid Nagar police station, Kishore Chandra Mund, said that the matter was being investigated and the police were trying to ascertain whether it was the owner of Aarohi Creations who committed the offence or the social networking page was hacked.

The police refused to divulge details about Aarohi Creations or its owner. Earlier this month, there was a post on the same page which reported that the organisation was running a sex racket in the city. There is a possibility that the account was hacked, Mund added.

Soon after the matter was reported to the police, the social networking account was blocked. On Sunday, the police will be writing to Facebook authorities to verify who accessed the account and the IP address of the system from whichthe pictures were posted.

Mayor Promotes Face to Face Social Networking – SouthFloridaGayNews.com

In the age of social media, Mayor Gary Resnick wants more residents to participate in old-fashioned face to face social networking.

To that end, the mayor announced a potluck event so neighbors can meet each other again. Its scheduled for Thursday, April 6 at 5:30 p.m. at Coral Gardens Park, Northeast 27 Drive and Coral Gardens Drive, in the eastern portion of the city. Resnick said organizing the event was the fulfillment of a promise he said he made during his re-election campaign.

Resnick asked those who attend to bring food and to leave their smartphones. He added that there will also be games, activities and refreshments.

City Manager Leigh Ann Henderson said the first neighborhood block party will serve as a test and that the city hopes to do one every couple of months. Were looking for neighbors who want to host one, said Henderson.

That desire for face to face social interaction isnt only shared by the mayor.

The Circle of Friends is a group formed last year by residents Janice Fromal and Benjamin Little. But while the group is filled with members who want face to face socialization, Little said the members dont really think about the reasons why. Its just something they do.

Were an older group and Im not sure how much any of us are really happy using social media. This is an older crowd. Were all over 60. I dont think social media enters into our thinking at all.

The group meets the second Wednesday of each month from 4 to 6 p.m., usually at Hagen Park, and does a different activity each time. On April 12, members will be meeting in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea for dinner. Those interested must sign up before the event. The last event scheduled so far is on July 12.

Weve had card games. Weve had board games. Weve had bingo. Weve had somebody come and talk to us about the challenges of exercise [at an older age], Little said. We get together as a group and have a good time.

Reactions, Mentions Arrive on Facebook Messenger – PCMag India

Facebook is bringing reactions and mentions, two key features of its flagship social media platform, to the Messenger app.

Designed for use in group chats, reactions will work much the same way they currently do in your Facebook News Feed. Tapping and holding any message in a chat will bring up a selection of emoji similar to those that appear when you hover your mouse over the "like" button on a post on Facebook.

Messenger reactions will also include the thumbs up and thumbs down emoji, which might come in handy to accept or reject the restaurant that someone in the chat suggests for dinner, for example. Reactions also work in one-on-one conversations, and they'll show up on any message, including text, stickers, videos, and GIFs. They can even be used on other emoji (in other words, if your group texts are anything like ours, you'll need to get ready for even more emoji overload).

The other classic Facebook feature arriving on Messenger is the ability to directly notify someone when they've been mentioned in a conversation. As you would when you're composing a Facebook post or status update, mention someone in a Messages conversation by typing the "@" symbol or the first few letters of his or her name.

Everyone in the group chat will get a notification when you send the message, but the person you mention will get a different notification that tells them they were called out.

Facebook says the new mention and reaction features will be rolling out to Messenger users worldwide in the next few days, as well as users of the Chat app for Facebook Workplace.
