Cyber criminals increasingly targeting social networking sites like Facebook to steal money

Sydney, Feb 8 (ANI): Australian cyber crime authorities have issued a warning to internet users that cyber criminals are increasingly targeting social networking sites like Facebook as a way to steal their money.

Commander Glen McEwen, manager of the Australian Federal Police's cyber crime operations, and Federal Agent Scott Mellis have said that the growing commercialization of social media through links to online trading provided cyber criminals with a strong motivation to hack people's account details, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

Mellis said that the growing link between social networking and online trading known as 'buy, swap and sell sites' is particularly dangerous because of the large amount of cash involved, which attract hackers.

He added that users are tricked into handing over payment details by the hackers, who then unleash malware attacks upon them to steal their cash.

According to Mellis, another such threat is mobile device malware, specially in smartphones, which are much less protected by anti-virus softwares as compared to computers.

Mellis said that people should explore for more options to secure their phones from such attacks as they access sensitive information while banking, which makes these phones an easy target for cyber criminals.

McEwen and Mellis also outlined other such threats for web users, which included a 'form-grabbing malware' that can steal large amounts of personal data.

McEwen said that cybercrime was preventable, if people considered it as serious as crime in the real world, although he added that it may take a long time for people to become technically savvy enough and aware to implement such safety measures.

He also said it is a challenge for law enforcement officials to uncover the crimes going on in the cyber world. (ANI)

Social media may aid HIV prevention

Washington, February 8 (ANI): Social networking sites including Facebook could serve as effective tools for preventing HIV infection among at-risk groups, US researchers say.

In a study, researchers found that African American and Latino men who have sex with men voluntarily used health-related Facebook groups, which were created by the study's investigators, to discuss such things as HIV knowledge, stigma and prevention and ultimately to request at-home HIV testing kits.

"Researchers, policymakers and public health professionals are hoping that social media can be used as a tool for improving health research and solving health and HIV prevention-related issues," said principal investigator Sean Young, an assistant professor of family medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

"This study helps direct us toward that goal by suggesting that participants will use social media to learn about HIV prevention and that those who talk about HIV prevention over social networking groups are not just talking about it - they are acting on their words by getting an HIV test."

The study also demonstrates that social networking can be a useful tool for collecting and analyzing data, added Young, who is a member of the Center for HIV Identification, Prevention and Treatment Services (CHIPTS) at UCLA.

"Having one platform that allows multiple types of data collection and analysis can save money and improve the accuracy of research findings," he said.

The researchers recruited African American and Latino men who have sex with men, either through banner ads placed on social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace, through a Facebook fan page with study information, through banner ads and posts on Craigslist, and from venues such as bars, schools, gyms and community organizations in Los Angeles. They also recruited study subjects from other population groups to add diversity to the study group.

African American men who have sex with men have been shown to have a disproportionately high risk of becoming infected with HIV, and Latino men are also at high risk, the researchers said.

In total, 112 participants were recruited, nearly 90 percent of whom were African American or Latino, for the 12-week intervention and one-year follow-up after. The average age was 31.

Participants were randomly assigned on Facebook to either a general health group or a secret HIV-prevention group - one that could not be accessed or searched for by non-group members.

Grom Social's 12-year-old founder Zach Marks takes on social networking

Facebook isn't for everyone, and for one pre-teen being blocked from using the social network inspired a new approach to how kids interact online.

Zach Marks was just 11-years old when he tried to join Facebook. Although he was forbidden to join, and Facebook's minimum age requirement is 13-years-old, Marks successfully started two profiles. One of his Facebook profiles had about 680 friends, and Marks admitted that he saw a lot of inappropriate content.

After a family-friend found the pre-teen's profile and reported back to his parents, Marks was told that if he wanted to join a social network, to make one of his own. And that is what he set forth to do.

Grom Social is a social network just for kids. Marks wants to coin the term "Grom," which is Australian surfer slang, to mean a promising young individual that wants to learn. The way the social site works is that children must sign on with a parent. Adults cannot join without a child either. Marks says that members can't curse or post inappropriate pictures.

So how did a 12-year-old build an entire social network? He didn't do it alone. Marks told CBS News in an interview that his dad's friend ultimately helped him build the site, but all of the idea and the concept came from Marks and his siblings. It took a year to launch the website, which now has about 14,500 members.

On whether or not he will join Facebook when he's a teenager, Marks told CBS News: "I have no idea right now. Right now I'm having a lot of fun with Grom Social."
