DCCC to host social networking moguls Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss

Davidson County Community College will present social networking moguls Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss as part of the Campus Speaker Series.

The Winklevoss twins will present their side of the story portrayed in the Academy Award-winning film "The Social Network" from 11 a.m. to noon April 3 in the Conference Center of the Davidson Campus; it is open to the public.

The Winklevoss twins are known for HarvardConnection, later renamed ConnectU, along with Harvard classmate Divya Nardenra. In 2004, the twins made international headlines by suing Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg for $140 million, claiming he stole their ConnectU idea to create the popular social networking site Facebook.

Beyond social networking, the Winklevosses are also known for their rowing careers. Both competed in the men's pair rowing event in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The two are now venture capitalists.

Both Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss graduated from Harvard University in 2004 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in economics; they earned MBAs at Oxford University in 2010.

"Today, much of our society relies on social networking for communication, connecting with friends and family, and much more," says Lynne Watts, director of student life and leadership at DCCC. "Our students and community will have the opportunity to not only learn about their history with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg but also learn business savvy from these two successful brothers and entrepreneurs."

First Public Beta Release of New Social Networking Startup

SOWGi Launches Beta Release for New Social Networking Startup

New York, NY (PRWEB) March 14, 2013

The concept of SOWGi is simple. Life is filled with challenging experiences and we all go through our ups and downs. While those challenges may seem unique to us as individuals, in reality there is someone else in the world who is likely going through or has gone through something very similar. In other words, SomeOne Who Gets it! This is how the founding team came up with the name for SOWGi as an acronym for the phrase SomeOne Who Gets it.

SOWGi is a global social support network that provides an environment where bonds between friends can be strengthened, new relationships can be formed and lifes many challenges can be resolved from the simple act of sharing our love and life experiences with one another. SOWGi is unique in its approach to providing its members with a platform to share their personal challenges by offering them the ability to post as themselves or anonymously (if something is too personal). Members can request support when they need it most or be willing to help others with a difficulty they are facing. There is no better reward in life than the feeling you get when you help someone in need.

According to the Mayo Clinic, a social support networking is made up of friends, family and peers and provide us the comfort of knowing that someone is there for us when we need them. Having a strong social support system in ones life has even proven to improve mental and physical health in certain studies.

With the initial private beta release, SOWGi has shown itself to be an ideal place for people that are interested in creating meaningful connections, sharing their valuable advice, experiences and ideas. The connections being formed between the members of SOWGi consistently reach a deeper emotional level than you might see on some of the other major social networks.

By opening up the social network for public use, Matthew Stein and the founding team are all excited for the amazing new connections soon to be formed and the invaluable experiences to be shared.

Imagine a world where Facebook, with all its 1 billion users, was created for the purpose of bringing people together to help each other. The amount of social change this would cause throughout the world would be immeasurable. said SOWGi co-founder, Matthew Stein. As the SOWGi network grows, this is the type of positive change we hope to inspire. In fact, it is our intention to cause a SOWGi movement, where people are more empathetic and treat each other with more love and compassion.

The founders just have one final question for you, Are you SomeOne Who Gets it?

Apple wins US patent on social networking concept

Apple has won a new US patent on a social networking concept, says AppleInsider. Titled Apparatus and method for efficiently managing data in a social networking service, it mainly deals with a way of handling "friend" connections in a network. This includes the use of three databases: one for friends, one for out-of-network users, and a write-ahead log for detecting and solving any issues.

Friends are associated with a destination signaling identifier (DSID) or their handle. For two people to achieve the friend state, though, one of them has to send a friend request, and the other has to accept. Separating Apple's idea from some other social networks are "spammer" and "stalker" meters. Each time a person sends a friend request, their spam count rises by one, until a limit is reached and no more requests can be sent out. The stalker meter goes up by one each time a friend request is denied, and after a certain point, additional attempts to friend someone will be blocked. The subject of the friend requests can preempt this by choosing to ignore them.

The write-ahead log generator tracks and manages various interactions on a network, including ones not already mentioned, such as merging two handles. A key can be generated for each transaction, and later used to resolve any potential database conflicts.

Apple's idea could be implemented using an API, and integrated into both mobile and desktop platforms. A patent application was first submitted in 2010; it was likely connected to that year's debut of Ping, an iTunes-based social network. The network ultimately flopped, something typically blamed on its restricted platform reach and a lack of Facebook hooks.

Apple Patents ‘Friend Or Foe’ Identification System For Social Networking Apps And Services

Apple has been granted a patent today (via AppleInsider) in an area where it hasnt had tremendous success: social networking. But the system described in the patent isnt specific to Apples own social services, and instead describes software that could be integrated into iOS and made accessible to other apps and services as an API to help regulate and maintain a common friendservice database.

On the one hand, Apples patent describes a way to reconcile data from various apps around friends and friend requests, updating existing contacts and merging entries as necessary to make sure that data from all social apps is used to keep records as up-to-date as possible. Already, we see something like this at work as the iOS Contacts app can plug into and draw information from Facebook and iOS, but this patent covers much broader use which could be made available on an app-by-app basis via an API.

The other, perhaps more important feature here is an anti-spam recognition engine that can automatically flag users who are virtually stalking others, by pelting them with numerous friend requests. Apples patent describes a way to assign users both a spammer and stalker count depending on their actions. The spammer count is upped every time a user sends out a friend request or similar attempt to connect, while the stalker count increases every time one of those requests is rejected. Hit a certain pre-determined threshold in either, and that users requests will be ignored entirely by the other party.

Social networks already employ anti-spam measures in their own products, but Apples is interesting because it would be made accessible to outside developers via API, as described in the patent. An anti-spammer and stalker database that covers iOS and its third-party developers as a whole would be a powerful tool, and potentially a big help in curbing unwanted connection attempts, which is in turn better for overall engagement.

Apple isnt likely to go all-out on a social networking product of its own: it seems to have accepted that the best way to make the iOS platform social is through third-party service integration. But tools like the one described in this patent could help others who are doing social on the platform maximize their own products.
