‘Hell Is Other People’ Is The World’s First Anti-Social Network

Tired of social networking? Then you're in luck. There's now an anti-social network - and it promises to keep you as far away from your friends as possible.

'Hell Is Other People' is a new web application designed specifically to keep you separated from your friends.

Using data taken from Foursquare, the app attempts to warn you when you're getting too close to anyone you know.

Described as "an experiment in anti-social media" the site says it "will track your "friends" and calculate optimally distanced locations for avoiding them".

It highlights various 'safe zones' and gives you critical information about friends' check-ins so you can attempt to skirt around them. Of course it does depend on your friends regularly checking-in to Foursquare - and really, if they use the location-based network enough to make Hell Is Other People genuinely useful, this is probably just a way to avoid having conversations about Foursquare.

Made by US developer his own struggles with social anxiety.

And yes, Arrested Development fans, while we know George Maharis got there first (or did he?) that doesn't quite count.

Performance of social networking sites – Index from Keynote Systems for May 2013

Keynote Systems, the expert in internet and mobile cloud monitoring, monitors the top 11 UK social networking sites on a monthly basis and analyses how these sites perform compared to their competitors. By Robert Castley.

The social media site homepages were more reliable in May than they were in April meaning that the chances of a site loading correctly when visited were higher. Ten out of the 11 pages had a successful load rate over 99 percent in May, compared to only seven out of the 11 sites achieving this is April. Similarly, in terms of the time pages took to load, the sites performed better in May than they did in April. Two out of the 11 sites achieved an average response time of under one second in May Google+ and Pinterest compared to in April when only Google+ was able to load this time.

Despite the number of sites performing well increasing as a whole, the sites performance remained fairly consistent. The average load time of all the social media homepages took 2.69 seconds in May, compared to 2.63 seconds in April. In terms of availability, the sites had a 99.48 percent successful load rate in May, only marginally better than 99.17 percent in April.

The changes occurring between April and May were primarily due to three of the social media sites YouTube, Pinterest and Flicker. For YouTube, after making substantial improvements last month, in May the site was slower by over a third of a second than it had been in April. Homepage size increased from 0.52MB to 1.28MB and its object number went up from 25 to 29, a hefty increase that resulted in the page slow down. The YouTube homepage regularly changes and the varying results show how big an impact these can have on performance. It is a testament to YouTube that reliability hasn't suffered in April reliability stood at 99.04 percent compared to 99.13 percent in May.

Pinterest saw a more positive change as its faster load time and higher successful load rate from April continued into May. Pinterest was able to reduce its object count further in May, from 19 to 18 and while its page size remained the same at 0.17MB, load time reduced from 1.47 seconds in April to 1.41 seconds in May. Successful load rate also increased from 99.64 percent in April to 99.84 percent in May.

Flickrs homepage also saw significant changes this month. Flicker was slower in May taking 1.93 seconds to load, compared to 1.69 seconds to load in April. This was most likely due to the increased page size from 0.5MB to 0.84MB, despite the object number for the page only increasing by one. Successful load rate was also maintained at 99.43 percent in both April and May.

The improvements in the performance of the social media homepages this month is promising. The fact that two out of the 11 sites have now made it under the one second load time, and ten out of the 11 sites have a successful load rate of above 99 percent, is a brilliant achievement. Google+ and Pinterest are now racing at the front of the pack, both having met these high standards. The fact that these two sites performing the best are also two of the newest, and to some, the most exciting on the internet at the moment, is no coincidence. It's great to see that they are continuing to make a good first impression.

Half (47%) of US pet owners believe owning a pet is better for your social life than social networking sites, reports …

NEW YORK, June 17, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- While advancements in digital technology and increased popularity of social networking have made their mark on and offline social interaction in recent years, it seems some Americans have more faith in a pet to help their social life. Indeed, according to new research from Mintel, almost half (47%) of pet owners believe owning a pet is better for your social life than social networking sites.

But it seems there is still a place for digital marketing and social media when it comes to the nation's pet owners. Some 16% of pet owners claim to be interested in technologies that can enhance relationships with their pet and over one in ten (12%) say that they use social media to learn about pet-related products and services. Meanwhile, 28% of respondents in Mintel's research claim to receive online or promotional discounts for pet related products and 17% say that they would like to receive pet-related promotions that they can redeem using their phone.

"Whereas the pet shop owner used to be the prime touch point to find out how best to care for their pet, social media has become the new way for pet owners to explore and share experiences around their pet," notes Gabi Lieberman, social media analyst at Mintel. "Further, as people take a more renewed interest in their own diets, we're seeing them pass along their own concerns about food ingredients, creating a market for gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan pet foods."

And it is Millennial consumers who are most engaged with pet related technology. Today, 17% of Millennial pet owners have a pet-related app on their smartphone or tablet, a figure that falls to 9% for all pet owners. Additionally, 27% of that generation would like to receive promotions and coupons for pet care products that can be redeemed via their phone and one in four (26%) are interested in technologies and innovations that foster a stronger pet-owner relationship.

"Millennials particularly tend to welcome the idea of integrating technology with their pet relationship experiences, especially as people seek to gain celebrity status not just for themselves, but for their pets as well. While this push toward making pets celebrities has further pushed the power away from the brands and into the hands of consumers, brands are finding creative ways to integrate these Internet celebrities into their own marketing campaigns as a way to extend their reach," Gabi Lieberman continues.

Moreover, Mintel research found that pet owners would rather spend their leisure time taking care of their pets instead of watching TV or surfing online, as just 7% said they would rather zone out in front of the TV or spend time online instead of with their pet, while only 6% would prefer to own the latest electronic device over their pet.

"Brands are becoming very creative with their social media campaigns, using gimmicks like dogs on skateboards, celebrity endorsements and online cat awards to attract the attention of pet owners. It's one of the few categories where brands aren't actually marketing to the end user, and they're tapping into something very personal for people, so they have to be creative, and social media really allows them to do that," Gabi Lieberman concludes.
