Parents warned after men target girls online

Parents warned after men target girls online

2:16pm Monday 10th June 2013 in News By Sarah Davies

MIDDLE aged men have been using social networking websites to groom young girls in Worcestershire, police have revealed.

Officers from West Mercia Police are currently involved in at least two separate investigations into men contacting teenagers in the Redditch area and their inquiries are ongoing.

The incidents have sparked detectives to urge parents and carers to talk to youngsters about the dangers of the internet.

PC Richard Waterhouse, of West Mercia Police, said: It seems that no matter how often young people are warned of the dangers at school, many young people have friends on social media sites that they do not know and have never met.

I am urging parents to sit down with their children and check their friends on sites such as facebook. If there are any that they do not know and never met they need to remove them as youngsters have no idea who these people are and are putting themselves at risk.

Young people - and their parents - often fall into the trap of assuming they are safe in their own homes, and that being upstairs in their bedroom playing on mobile phones and computers is preferable to being out on the streets.

However the sad truth is that people online may not always be who they claim to be.

"They may in fact be a sexual predator who seeks to gain a childs trust before asking them questions which make them uncomfortable, persuading them to take indecent photographs of themselves or even setting up a meeting, which is extremely dangerous.

For Disabled Teens, Flirting Can Be Easier Online

(WOMENSENEWS)--The boom in social networking sites such Crazy Blind Date by OkCupid, Skout, Tinder and Facebook's new Graph Search application may be easing the way for disabled teens to meet friends, flirt and find dates.

Danielle Sheypuk, a clinical psychologist who is also Ms. Wheelchair New York 2012, said she wishes the sites--which many teens are accessing through special applications on their mobile phones-- had been around when she was a teen.

"I would have had more self-esteem in terms of dating earlier and I would have been out there earlier and that would have been better," said Sheypuk, who specializes in problems of dating, relationships and sexuality among the disabled in her work. "When you're not dating you feel really left out."

The difficulties with walking and navigating, Sheypuk said, mean disabled teens are less likely to go on dates. "You are not exposed to opportunities to make those connections as other people are." Going online is easy for people who have a difficult time leaving the house.

Sheypuk said she is also using the Internet in her own private therapy practice by meeting clients over Skype to make it easier for teens and adults with disabilities to attend her therapy sessions.

She said the problem of disabled teens not socializing like "normal" teens is a huge public health concern. "It leads to feelings of loneliness, isolation, anxiety, hopelessness and depression in people. A disabled teen girl wants more than good grades; she wants a first kiss like her friends."

Sheypuk believes online dating sites for teens are a great way to "go in and start mixing," in all aspects, including with "normal" teens. She doesn't favor dating sites specifically for disabled people because it would perpetuate the unhealthy attitude of belong to a separate group.

Nielsen study: Social networking dominates smartphone, tablet use

A new report from Nielsen examines a fast-evolving segment of the media landscape: viewing on smartphones and tablets.

Consumers are taking advantage of their portable devices to watch videos, access news and information, check sports, engage in social networking and shop. The time devoted to social networking dwarfs that of streaming video or accessing sports, Nielsen found in its cross-platform report for June.

Smartphone users spent 9 hours and 6 minutes a month on social networks -- say, posting status updates on Facebook, tweeting their thoughts to followers on Twitter or checking-in on Foursquare. Apple iPad users devoted 3 hours and 41 minutes a month to social networks.

By comparison, smartphone users spent about 1 hour and 15 minutes a month streaming video on the device, and around 1 hour and 11 minutes engaged in sports, Nielsen reported. IPad users invested more time watching video on the device's larger screen -- about 1 hour and 48 minutes a month, (with 50 minutes on sports), Nielsen found.

Peak usage of these mobile devices coincides with TV's prime time: with iPad app usage cresting at 9 p.m., Nielsen found.

Time invested in mobile apps surpasses usage of the mobile Web on smartphones and tablets.

Nielsen found smartphone users spent about 87% of their "app/Web" time engaged in mobile apps, with just 13% of that time on the Web, the researchers found. The same trend is true of iPad users, who spent 76% of their time using mobile apps, according to Nielsen.

U.S. viewers seemed to find more time for entertainment in the first quarter of the year: TV viewing rose, compared with the same time a year earlier, as did the amount of time-shifted TV viewing of previously recorded programs, and viewing of video via the Internet and on a mobile phone.

Only the time spent using a game console fell in the first three months of the year, Nielsen found.
