Giggem, which officially launched publicly this week, attempts to bring the way bands find members into the digital age, eliminating the need to place an ad in the back of a music magazine and hope for the best, by acting as a social networking site for the music industry -- essentially a kind of LinkedIn exclusively for musicians.
The site, which is currently in beta, is open to all aspects of the music industry and sign-up is free. When new users sign up they can choose to do so as a musician looking for a band to join or people to promote their work, as a band looking for musicians or promoters, as a songwriter looking for musicians, as a manager looking for bands or singers, as a label looking for bands, or even just as a fan looking for new music to enjoy.
If, for example, one wishes to sign up as a musician, one creates a page that acts as a resume, with a personal photo, video, links to any forthcoming shows, as well as general info on what one is looking for, e.g. a band, a manager, etc. Essentially the same process applies to those signing up as bands, songwriters, managers and labels.
For fans the process is slightly different: the page shows a list of bands, in portrait format, that one might be interested in, and that are getting a lot of buzz, as well as forthcoming gigs of appropriate bands and recent video and photo footage.
Users of the site can also message other users, see who has viewed their profile, and post any opportunities they hear about that they think other musicians might be interested in on the site.
Other social networking sites designed with musicians in mind include Circle.fm, which aims to match musicians together based on a number of criteria such as genre and location, and of course the revamped MySpace which, among other things, lets users search for bands by genre, though it has more of a band/fan link rather than the musician/musician link found on Giggem or Circle.fm.
