IDG News Service - Microsoft has enhanced its Yammer enterprise social networking suite's mobile applications, email integration and document collaboration.

Microsoft detailed the improvements on Tuesday at an event it held in San Francisco for Yammer customers that kicks off its Working Social Tour, scheduled to land in up to 200 cities worldwide, including New York City, Amsterdam, Sao Paulo and Tokyo.

"It's part of our push to connect with Yammer customers," said Jared Spataro, general manager, Microsoft Office, in an interview. Attendees are expected to be both Yammer customers as well as those who are using Office 365, Microsoft's cloud email and collaboration suite, which includes online versions of Exchange, Lync, SharePoint and Office.

Microsoft bought Yammer in mid-2012 for $1.2 billion in order to extend the enterprise social networking (ESN) capabilities of its SharePoint collaboration server and of other products in the Office family and beyond. Microsoft is in the process of integrating Yammer's cloud suite with those products now.

The mobile improvements include a revamped iPad application and tweaks to the Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 applications. The overhaul of the iPad app is supposed to simplify the user experience, while the Windows apps got improvements to live tiles and a better inbox.

Microsoft also deepened the interoperability between Yammer and email systems, making it possible for people to participate in Yammer group discussions through email messaging and without necessarily having a Yammer account.

Establishing bridges between Yammer and email is important because many customers are still trying to figure out the best way to use the ESN suite with email, according to Spataro.

Veep race heats up on social media

KUALA LUMPUR: AS the contest for the Umno vicepresidential spots heats up, the candidates vying for the three posts are racing against time to meet as many delegates as possible.

Candidates scramble to and from events, lucky to sleep five hours at night. But thats not the only game in town any more. Social media has become part and parcel of campaign communications and it is expected to play an influential role in the run-up to the polls this Saturday.

The three incumbents Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein and the three challengers Tan Sri Mohd Isa Abdul Samad, Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam are active on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking sites.

Creating a social media strategy during political campaigns is an essential part of every candidate's plan. With social media sites often getting more traffic than official campaign websites, it is important for candidates to get connected.

"Social media is playing an increasingly important role in the way campaigns are run and how candidates approach voters," said Isa, who runs an active blog, besides maintaining a Facebook page that he created just a month ago.

"It allows us (candidates) to not only communicate more effectively to a larger audience, but also creates a two-way street for party grassroots to respond and interact with leaders.

"This dynamic exchange of information and ideas makes for a healthier and more participative democracy."

Isa admitted that to galvanise and canvass support from the younger section of party delegates, he needed to get in touch with them, both offline and online.

On his Facebook page, he has published a series of amusing webcomics called "Semangat Orang Lama", in which he suggests that despite being an old guard in Umno politics, he has the experience and vigour to contribute to the party's cause.

On average, each of the vice-president candidates has 20,000 to 30,000 followers on Facebook. However, as far as online popularity goes, Shafie is leading the pack after gaining 105,000 "Likes".

Microsoft revamps Yammer's iPad app

Microsoft has enhanced its Yammer enterprise social networking suite's mobile applications, email integration, and document collaboration.

"They're looking for a mental model for how to use email and Yammer and how to think about those two worlds coming together because not everyone jumps on Yammer or enterprise social networking at the same time," he said.

Unlike other vendors, Microsoft doesn't see ESN suites as a replacement for email communications. "We believe they're very complementary tools, that they can and should coexist, and that when used together they provide a very good, rounded experience," Spataro said.

Microsoft has also started to add features to Yammer so that it can be used as a more structured tool for getting things done and managing tasks, not just as a social conversation meeting place, he said.

NewsGator finetunes its business social-collaboration suite

NewsGator wants its Social Sites add-on for SharePoint to handle companies innovation cycles with a beefed-up set of capabilities for brainstorming, idea evaluation, concept development, and execution.

Social Sites, an enterprise social networking (ESN) product, has an existing ideation module thats called Idea Stream and is mainly for brainstorming, but NewsGator released on Tuesday a broader innovation edition of the full suite.

With Social Sites for Innovation, NewsGator wants to tap further into the demand for enterprise software that lets companies solicit ideas from employees, collect and manage their contributions and distill the suggestions into concrete plans.

In fact, last month Mindjet, which makes project-based collaboration software, merged with Spigit, which specializes in innovation management, to offer enterprises tools that help from idea creation to completion of projects. Other NewsGator rivals provide various levels of innovation management functionality for their broader ESN suites.

Social Sites for Innovation can be used with on premises and private cloud implementations of SharePoint 2010 and SharePoint 2013.

The product replaces the existing, more limited Idea Stream module, which costs $5 per user per year, according to Jen Keyerleber, senior solutions manager at NewsGator.

Current customers who own the Idea Stream module are able to expand their innovation process by purchasing the new [Social Sites for Innovation], which accesses of all of their existing ideation campaigns to take advantage of [its] end-to-end innovation capabilities, she said.

Ahead in the roadmap are plans to extend Social Sites for Innovation for use not only internally among employees but also by a companys customers and partners, Keyerleber said.

Social Sites for Innovation can be bought via a subscription or a perpetual license, which are both priced per user. Cost depends on the size of implementations.

For example, a subscription for 5,000 users to Social Sites for Innovation is $12.50 per user per year, on top of the $17.50 per user per year for the core Social Sites suite, which is required.
