Paul to speak at Harvard event hosted by ex-rival

(CNN) - Sen. Rand Paul will join his former GOP rival on stage in an appearance at Harvard University later this month.

Harvard's Institute of Politics announced Friday that Trey Grayson, the institute's director and Paul's opponent in Kentucky's GOP primary for the 2010 Senate race, will introduce Paul and then moderate a Q&A session with the potential presidential contender.

Grayson, who became the institute's director in 2011, told CNN he considers Paul "the most compelling figure in the Republican Party right now." He said he's wanted Paul to speak at the institute for a few years but scheduling issues have gotten in the way.

"I'm kind of glad it's taken a while to make the schedule work," he said. "The reality is he's more of an interesting speaker today than he would have been two years ago."

Paul will be free to speak about whatever he wants, Grayson said.

The April 25th event will come a little more than a month after Paul's speech at the University of California at Berkeley, a liberal-leaning institution that's not a typical stop for Republican politicians.

Grayson said he's been "pleased at how (Paul) reaches out to groups that aren't part of the traditional Republican coalition" and argued "he does a great job of appealing to young voters."

Also of note, Republican Sen. John McCain, who's publicly sparred with Paul in the past, will speak at the institute two days before Paul.

Grayson was considered the early-on favorite in the 2010 Kentucky GOP primary, and enjoyed the backing of Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky. But Paul, boosted with strong tea party support, defeated the then-secretary of state. Grayson went on to endorse Paul in the general election.

While Grayson was complimentary of Paul on Friday, he said the two don't see or speak to each other very often and he described their relationship as "fine."

Rand Paul for President?

By Joe Carbonari

Rand Paul is not afraid of upsetting apple carts, though whether more for general attention or for direct results has not always been clear. His attacks on Bill Clinton, however, suggest there is more than just a bit of shrewdness to his actions. Bills indiscretions play well with Pauls base, and conflating the two Clintons may work against Hillary later while helping Paul now, pre-primary.

Cumulatively, my concern with Paul as a prospective president stems from his seeming lack of perspective. His international policy appears to be more simply isolationist than truly informed, and his small government predilection a real threat to our social safety net.

On the other hand, at times, I find Rand Paul both refreshing and entertaining. As a 2016 presidential candidate, however, he concerns me. I dont believe that he has the gravitas for the job, neither the temperament nor the vision. I see his role more as a guardian of our liberty than as a guide for it. Perhaps the primary race will sufficiently season him; perhaps not.

Paul notably supports the states applying for an amendment convention under Article V, U.S.C. for the purpose of amending the Constitution. Particularly, he supports term limits (37 States impose term limits on State officials) and a balanced budget (49 States impose a balanced budget). Paul believes the federal government should be constitutionally bound in the same manner that the states are, and he knows the states have the capability of requiring this in the Constitution.

Paul appeals to Democrats, Republicans, Independents and Libertarians alike, which is exactly what America needs in 2016 to move federal politics in a positive direction for states and people.

Rand Paul: 'I want all pilots to be armed'

WASHINGTON, April 11 (UPI) -- Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., says that he would like to see "100 percent" of pilots armed in order to prevent another terrorist attack like 9/11.

"I think that you should be allowed to have weapons on military bases. I'm for allowing those who have concealed carry, at the very least, have their weapons on base. But also I'm concerned about what is the most cost-effective way of preventing another 9/11. I want all pilots to be armed. The president has zeroed this out of his budget. He's advocated for getting rid of the program," said Paul on Fox News. "I have a bill to streamline this and the goal of my bill is to have 100 percent of American pilots armed."

Paul confronted former Homeland Security Secretary Secretary Janet Napalitano last April about the program reduction and she responded to him during 2013 Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing.

"Well, Ill tell you the reason why we zeroed it out, Senator, and that is -- and it goes to a lot of the changes in the budget, were moving to risk-based. And an FFDO program is not risk-based. Its just happenstance, where you happen to have a pilot on board that went through the training or not. Were offering the training to air carriers if they want their pilots covered. But we would rather stick with the FAMS [Federal Air Marshal Service], who are portion-based on risk."

There have been incidents where pilots firearms have accidentally fired in the cockpit, causing safety concerns about arming pilots.
