Rand Paul says student-teacher ratio 'should go to a million to one'

Sen. Rand Paul completely dismissed the idea that low student-to-teacher ratios were precursors to academic success, saying at a recent New Establishment Summit that a much higher ratio is OK by him even if its a million students to one teacher.

I think we should go to a million to one, he said, at the event sponsored by Vanity Fair.

He made the comments in the context of discussing class size and technology on a panel that included Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, investor John Doerr and author Bob Woodward.

Mr. Paul said educators should jump on board on new technologies that allow for huge groupings to learn from just one teacher.

I think extraordinary things can happen, he said, Vanity Fair reported. I think the governments gotten in the way.

The theme of the panel discussion was to discuss what government could do to leverage technology for the betterment of society, Vanity Fair said.

Common consensus seemed to be: Less is more, and privatization is key. For instance, Mr. Rand didnt directly address a question tossed his way about climate change and the impacts of humans on the atmosphere but he did suggest the government wasnt exactly the best source to protect the environment.

The way to make sure that the environment is always protected is to make it profitable, he said, Vanity Fair reported.

The panel also talked about health care, with Mr. Schmidt saying: Its about to explode. Mr. Rand agreed and said, The consumer is not connected to the product, Vanity Fair reported.

Rand Paul Will Embrace Any Idiotic Idea Techies Come Up With

Silicon Valley's tech tycoons have been lurching towards the right wing for years now. But with the Valley's valuations climbing to record heights, those billionaires are backing Republicans like never beforeand the party of obstruction is willing to say whatever it takes to get their dollars.

Senator Rand Paul, who already announced a new office opening in the Bay Area, made another swing through San Francisco this week to talk about his "ideas" for America. This time, the expected 2016 presidential candidate appeared on stage at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit on a panel entitled "Why Can't Tech Save Politics?"

Paul was joined by Democratic boosters Eric Schmidt and venture capitalist John Doerr, with muckraking journalist Bob Woodward moderating the discussion. Much to Woodward's disbelief, it turned into a techie lovefest.

Via Re/code:

Paul launched into a series of metaphors to explain Obamacare problems, and I couldn't quite follow, but he began with mouthwash, which led to eye surgery, and concluded with: "Obamacare creates an artificial market."

Maybe the solution is oh I don't know, more entrepreneurs?

"So is the solution here is to make the federal government into a big giant venture capital firm?" Woodward asked.

"Partially, that is the answer," Paul concurred.

Yes and yes, Doerr said.

Rand Paul heading to Virginia for Gillespie, Brat

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., makes comments during a meet and greet along with North Carolina Republican Senatorial candidate Thom Tillis at Big Eds City Market in Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014. Paul is helping North Carolina Republican Senate candidate ... more >

Sen. Rand Paul, Kentucky Republican, is heading to Virginia next week to help boost Republicans Ed Gillespie and Dave Brat, who are running this year for seats in the U.S. Senate and U.S. House, respectively.

The public rally is scheduled to take place Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center in Ashland, about 20 miles north of Richmond.

Mr. Paul, a likely 2016 presidential contender, has been busy making stops on behalf of candidates in early presidential primary and battleground states, and has trips scheduled for New Hampshire, Ohio, Iowa and other states the rest of the month.

President Obama carried Virginia twice, but was the first Democratic presidential candidate to do so since Lyndon Johnson in 1964 and the solidly purple state is poised to remain competitive for both sides. While there are libertarian candidates in these races in Virginia, neither has been able to gain much traction.

Mr. Gillespie is challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Warner this year and has trailed by about 10 points in recent polls, though that gap is closer than what numbers had been showing over the summer. Libertarian Robert Sarvis has been polling in the single digits.

Mr. Brat, who toppled former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in a June primary, is well-positioned to replace Mr. Cantor as the representative for the states 7th congressional district. Hes running against Democrat Jack Trammell and Libertarian James Carr.

The contours of the 7th district, which stretches from the Richmond suburbs north to the Shenandoah Valley, could have to change soon, however. A federal panel said Tuesday the state legislature must redraw its congressional district lines by April, ruling that race predominated lawmakers thinking when they drew a map packing African-American voters into the southeastern 3rd congressional district, which meanders from Richmond to Hampton Roads.

Rand Paul to rally GOP ahead of Clinton visit

U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., will rally Republicans at four stops in New Hampshire on Oct. 16, the same day former President Bill Clinton visits to speak to the Democrats' "Jefferson Jackson" dinner in Manchester.

Paul, who may run for president in 2016, was in New Hampshire last month as the keynote speaker at the state GOPs post-primary unity breakfast.

Pauls schedule has him starting the day at 9 a.m. with a get-out-the-vote rally at Republican Senate hopeful Scott Browns campaign headquarters in Manchester, just a short walk down Elm Street from where Clinton will speak that evening.

Paul then plans to be at a rally at 10:15 a.m. at the Republican State Committees office at 10 Water St. in Concord, followed by a noon pizza party with Plymouth State University College Republicans, and then a rally at the Republicans field office at 356 South Broadway in Salem.

Clinton is scheduled to speak to the New Hampshire Democratic Partys annual Jefferson Jackson celebration, which opens at 6 p.m. at the Radisson hotel in Manchester. While it is a major fund-raiser for Democrats, the event also serves to boost Democrats running for office. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to visit the state Nov. 2 for another rally.

Both parties have major national voices visiting the Granite State in the final three weeks to tout their candidates.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, plans to return Oct. 15 to campaign for Brown in his race against U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-NH.
