Rand Paul says student-teacher ratio 'should go to a million to one'

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., listens as North Carolina Republican Senate candidate Thom Tillis speaks during a meet and greet at Big Eds City Market in Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014. Paul is helping Tillis even after supporting Tillis chief ... more >

Sen. Rand Paul completely dismissed the idea that low student-to-teacher ratios were precursors to academic success, saying at a recent New Establishment Summit that a much higher ratio is OK by him even if its a million students to one teacher.

I think we should go to a million to one, he said, at the event sponsored by Vanity Fair.

He made the comments in the context of discussing class size and technology on a panel that included Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, investor John Doerr and author Bob Woodward.

Mr. Paul said educators should jump on board on new technologies that allow for huge groupings to learn from just one teacher.

I think extraordinary things can happen, he said, Vanity Fair reported. I think the governments gotten in the way.

The theme of the panel discussion was to discuss what government could do to leverage technology for the betterment of society, Vanity Fair said.

Common consensus seemed to be: Less is more, and privatization is key. For instance, Mr. Rand didnt directly address a question tossed his way about climate change and the impacts of humans on the atmosphere but he did suggest the government wasnt exactly the best source to protect the environment.

The way to make sure that the environment is always protected is to make it profitable, he said, Vanity Fair reported.

The panel also talked about health care, with Mr. Schmidt saying: Its about to explode. Mr. Rand agreed and said, The consumer is not connected to the product, Vanity Fair reported.

Rand Paul Will Embrace Any Idiotic Idea Techies Come Up With

Silicon Valley's tech tycoons have been lurching towards the right wing for years now. But with the Valley's valuations climbing to record heights, those billionaires are backing Republicans like never beforeand the party of obstruction is willing to say whatever it takes to get their dollars.

Senator Rand Paul, who already announced a new office opening in the Bay Area, made another swing through San Francisco this week to talk about his "ideas" for America. This time, the expected 2016 presidential candidate appeared on stage at the Vanity Fair New Establishment Summit on a panel entitled "Why Can't Tech Save Politics?"

Paul was joined by Democratic boosters Eric Schmidt and venture capitalist John Doerr, with muckraking journalist Bob Woodward moderating the discussion. Much to Woodward's disbelief, it turned into a techie lovefest.

Via Re/code:

Paul launched into a series of metaphors to explain Obamacare problems, and I couldn't quite follow, but he began with mouthwash, which led to eye surgery, and concluded with: "Obamacare creates an artificial market."

Maybe the solution is oh I don't know, more entrepreneurs?

"So is the solution here is to make the federal government into a big giant venture capital firm?" Woodward asked.

"Partially, that is the answer," Paul concurred.

Yes and yes, Doerr said.
