WASHINGTON -- Sen. Rand Paul wants to be so sure the public doesn't think he's an anti-vaccine extremist, he took a New York Times reporter with himTuesday when he went to get a shot himself. He even made sure there was a photo.

It was damage control for Paul, R-Ky.,lambastedas an anti-science panderer who would put children in harm's way. Conservatives may play to their base by denying climate change or questioning evolution, but those positions don't come without political risks. When a pair of likely 2016 GOP candidates started making skeptical comments about vaccines this week, in the face of a growing measles epidemic, Democrats pounced.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who started what appeared to be a Republican linequestioning the need for vaccines when he said that parents should have "a choice," tried to walk back his comments a day later.

Paul put himself at the center of the growing controversy when he said in an interview Monday vaccination should be voluntary.Ive heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines, Paulsaid in an interview with CNBC. He didn't specifically mention autism spectrum disorders, but appeared to be referring to that widely disseminated -- but thoroughly debunked -- link.

Paul, who represents the Libertarian wing of the Republican Party, made the case that it should be about choice.Im not arguing vaccines are a bad idea. I think theyre a good thing, but I think the parents should have some input,"he said in the interview. "The state doesnt own your children. Parents own the children and it is an issue of freedom.

House Speaker John Boehner tried to quash any notion that the GOP rejects the science or public health concerns behind vaccinations. "I dont know that we need another law, but I do believe all children ought to be vaccinated," he said Tuesday.

Even the White House was getting asked about vaccines. President Obama, on NBC, advised people to "get your kids vaccinated," and Hillary Clinton tweeted her own views, positioning herself as a concerned grandmother.

Senator Rand Paul tweeted a photo himself getting a booster vaccine Tuesday, a day after the Kentucky Republicans remarks on mandatory vaccinations caused a media storm.

The likely 2016 presidential contender said during a CNBC interview on Monday that hes heard of many tragic cases of walking, talking normal children who wound up with profound mental disorders after vaccines.

Theres 400 headlines now that say Paul says vaccines cause mental disorders, the libertarian told a New York Times reporter, whom hed invited to document his Hepatitis A vaccine. Thats not what I said. I said Ive heard of people whove had vaccines and they see a temporal association and they believe that.

Pauls comments came amid an ongoing vaccine debate prompted by a worsening measles outbreak in the U.S. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie also received criticism on Monday for saying parents should have some measure of choice in vaccinating their children.

Many public figures have since joined the vaccine conversation following Pauls comments, including presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, who tweeted Monday, The science is clear: The earth is round, the sky is blue, and #vaccineswork.

It's no surprise that Rand Paul's libertarian ideas have rankled some members of the Republican Party, but apparently, his wardrobe does too.

Politico reports that some attendees were turned off by the Kentucky senator's choice of attire when he spoke at the annual winter meeting hosted by the billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch: jeans, a blue sport coat and cowboy boots.

Frayda Levin, who supports Paul and attended the conference in California last month, said that some attendees though his appearance as "cavalier." Another attendee told Politico that while "jeans might work for a younger audience...these are old bulls who put on a tie every day to go to the office."

Paul's fellow speakers, Sens. Marco Rubio, R-Florida and Ted Cruz, R-Texas, both opted for slightly more dressy attire: Cruz also had on a sport coat, in a tan color, but wore his with dark slacks, and Rubio donned a navy suit and tie.

While the 2016 presidential campaign will be an expensive affair that demands candidates bring in every dollar they can get their hands on, Paul is less reliant on big donations from wealthier Americans than some of his colleagues. His campaign committee has brought in $5.9 million, or 43 percent of its individual contributions, from donors who gave less than $200, according to an analysis by the Center for Responsive Politics.

By contrast, Rubio's campaign brought in $10.2 million from small donations, but that represented just 34 percent of his individual contributions. And Cruz's committee brought in just $2.9 million, or 16 percent of his contributions from small-dollar donors.
