Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky, is expected to make his presidential candidacy official, in a speech on Apr. 7, in Louisville, Kentucky, CBS News confirms, citing a source familiar with Paul's plans.

The Kentucky senator's announcement, first reported by the New York Times, is timed to be the day after the NCAA championship game, and also during the two-week Senate recess coming at the end of March. Paul's announcement date enables him to begin his official run for the presidency at the beginning of a fundraising quarter. This will maximize the time he'll have to raise money before his first report is due to the Federal Election Commission. As a declared candidate, his finances will be filed and publicly available each quarter, and part of the success of his candidacy will be measured by the money he raises.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that although Paul may still change his mind about running, "invitations to the event have already been sent to supporters and Republican officials."

Paul will also be running for reelection to his Senate seat at the same time he runs for president. Though Kentucky does not allow candidates to be listed a ballot for two different offices, Paul was able to convince the state party to hold a nominating caucus, which allows him to run for both.

Politics and basketball could collide with Paul 2016 announcement

Provided by The Hill Politics and basketball could collide with Paul 2016 announcement

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) will launch his presidential campaign in Kentucky on April 7, but basketball could overshadow his announcement.

The Lexington Herald-Leader reports Paul will announce in front of supporters at the Galt House hotel in Louisville, one day after the NCAA basketball championship game where University of Kentucky is heavily favored in the tournament.

The undefeated Wildcats could potentially face Duke University, Pauls alma mater, in the finals. In 2010, Pauls rival for the GOP Senate nomination sought to highlightPauls medical degree from the hated out-of-state rival.

Following the announcement, Paul will jet-off for stops in the first four primary and caucus states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada.

Invitations for the event are already being sent out, although Paul could still decide against running, according to the Herald-Leader.

The New York Times has previously reported the April 7 launch date.

Paul has been a frequent visitor to the early-voting states, and hell return to New Hampshire this weekend for a spate of events with local political leaders, business leaders, and activists.

In addition to Paul, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (D) and Republican Sens. Marco Rubio (Fla.) and Ted Cruz (Texas) are also likely to hit the launch button on their presidential campaigns at some point next month.

A new fundraising cycle begins April 1, giving candidates a full quarter to build their campaign war chests before the next reporting period in July. The official announcements of candidacy also allow the contenders to transfer money from their Senate reelection accounts to their presidential accounts, and move the political teams theyve assembled at their leadership PACs into full-blown campaign operatives.

Paul eyes April 7 to announce White House run, AP source says

Sen. Rand Paul is set to make official a presidential bid that has long been expected, a senior adviser to the Kentucky Republican said Tuesday, pointing to April 7 as the kickoff date.

Paul's political team has invited backers to a midday event in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. The tea party hero was then set to visit the early nominating states of Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada - familiar destinations for him as has prepared for the formal entry into the race.

The adviser demanded anonymity to speak ahead of Paul's public announcement. The adviser adds that Paul could still pull the plug on a campaign, although that is not expected to happen.

A spokesman for Paul, Sergio Gor, declined to comment.

Paul would be among the first of the potential 2016 contenders to officially enter the race for the GOP nomination. He begins his presidential campaign as a familiar face among tea party- and libertarian-leaning voters, but also something of an odd-man-out among the establishment-focused corner of the GOP.

Paul's challenge will be to build backers among his natural base of support in the party while reassuring others that his views on topics such as foreign policy are not too far outside the mainstream. His critics - Republicans and Democrats alike - already have collected dozens of examples of Paul's rhetoric that they plan to use against him.

Paul will also have to cobble together the tens of millions in campaign donations that the nomination will cost.

Paul has proved a formidable fundraiser, especially from low-dollar and younger donors who back his limited-government pitch. But Wall Street-style Republicans have been rushing to sign up with other likely candidates such as former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida.

In an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, Rubio said he could "potentially" announce a bid in April but that he had not settled on a specific date.

"If you're going to run for president, you need sufficient time to raise the money and build the organization to be successful," Rubio said, adding that his decision would come "soon."
