PDP responsible for spate of insecurity, says APC

Chiefs of the All Progressives Congress in Ado-Ekiti , Ekiti State, on Wednesday blamed the Peoples Democratic Partys 15 years of misrule for the poverty and spate of insecurity in Nigeria.

They spoke at the official presentation of the APCs governorship candidate Governor Kayode Fayemi by the interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, ahead of the June 21 governorship election inthe state.

The criticism followed the spate of bomb blasts in the country and the abduction of of 200 pupils of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State by the Boko Haram group.

Reports said no fewer than 150 people died in Tuesdays twin bomb blasts in ever-busy Jos Terminus Market, Plateau state. On Thursday, two schools in Bauchi State were attacked while Kano city was bombed on Sunday.

A minute silent was observed at the rally in honour of victims of such attacks in Nigeria.

Imo Governor, Rochas Okorocha who called out governors of the APC to present their endorsement letters to Fayemi lamented that Nigeria was going through a very difficult moment.

Referring to the Tuesdays bombing, he said, Many may not agree that today Nigeria is going through a very difficult moment. Let me say that a nation like Nigeria that is facing extreme danger of daily bombings, killings and blood letting should better seek the wisest cause of action and not of mourning.

A former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the APC was the cure to Nigerias headache, ineptitude, insecurity, poverty and unemployment.

He said, On the morning of election, you have nothing to fear. Dont be afraid, go there, demand your rights, you will not have this (opportunity) again until another four years. This is the opportunity to show your happiness and the rejection of the property development party.

A former military Head of State and chief of the party, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, commended Fayemi whom he said through his achievements had demonstrated the capability of a good leader in the trying time of Nigeria.

BHaram: APC accuses Jonathan of insincerity

Interim National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Lai Mohammed | credits: File copy

The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday accused the Federal Government of being insincere in its war against the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

This was part of the communiqu read on behalf of the party, by its interim National publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, after a four-hour meeting at the partys National Headquarters, in Abuja.

Mohammed said the APC was disappointed that the Federal Government had yet to reach out to it; in spite of a subsisting offer of assistance and an appeal to the Jonathan-led administration to convene a national security summit.

The party said, We make bold to say that the Federal Government has been very insincere in its persistent call for national unity to combat the despicable Boko Haram sect.

This has been manifest, perhaps more than at any other time, since the tragic abduction of over 200 school girls from Chibok over a month ago.

Up to this moment, the Federal Government has yet to reach out to the APC, the main opposition party, on how to forge a common front against this despicable terror group, despite our incessant efforts to reach out to the government.

Nigerians will recall our various interventions in which we stated clearly that only a non-partisan approach could help extricate Nigeria from the death grip of Boko Haram; how we have consistently called on the government to organise a national stakeholders summit to put all hands on deck and how we have made a number of recommendations which we feel can help pep up the fight against the terror group.

The only response we have received so far is that in which the government said it had implemented or it is implementing those recommendations anyway, in what clearly amounts to an unnecessary hubris and a cold shoulder.

According to the party, the Federal Government that has been calling on the international community for assistance must know that charity begins at home, and that for all hands to be on deck, the APC cannot be ignored.

Weve not chosen Lagos gov candidate APC

Interim Publicity Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Joe Igbokwe | credits: File copy

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday refuted speculations that it had chosen former Accountant-General of the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, as its candidate for the 2015 governorship election in the state.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the Publicity Secretary of Lagos APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said the recent endorsement of Ambode as the next governor of Lagos by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, did not mean the party had picked him as its candidate.

He said, We have not chosen anybody as our candidate for the governorship election. The fact that the Oba of Lagos expressed his private opinion does not mean we have chosen a governorship candidate for 2015 election.

Also in a statement issued by Lagos APC on Tuesday, the party condemned the Peoples Democratic Party for threatening Oba Akiolu because of his personal endorsement of the candidature of Ambode for the Lagos State governorship contest in 2015.

APC also described as irresponsible, uncouth and callous the allegations levelled against the Oba of Lagos that he aided the rigging of elections in the state.

The party said the rude and callous statement emanating from Lagos PDP flowed from its frustration that the Oba rejected the multi-million dollar bribe the PDP had been dishing out to traditional rulers nationwide.

It added that the threat by the PDP to burn down the palace of the Oba of Lagos was a collective threat to the peace loving people of Lagos.

The statement read in part, For record purposes, the Oba of Lagos never made any illegal statement by stating his preference for the candidacy of Ambode who is still an aspirant of our party. We state that other traditional rulers have been known to make similar endorsements, and even President Goodluck Jonathan was openly cavorting traditional rulers all over the country recently for his presidential re-election aspiration.

It is understandable that the Lagos PDP has made itself a tale bearer that invests in speculating and circulating rumours and gossips, trading lies and innuendos over who gets what ticket and who backs who in Lagos APC, we dare say their attempt to pre-empt whoever emerges as APC candidate instead of working to present a credible candidate for their party, is downright silly and flows from the same lack of seriousness that has been the hallmark of Lagos PDP.
