Jonathan insincere in anti-terror fight APC

The All Progressives Congress on Tuesday accused the Federal Government of being insincere in its war against the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

This was contained in the communiqu read on behalf of the party, by its interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, after a four-hour meeting at the partys National Headquarters, in Abuja.

Mohammed said the APC was disappointed that the Federal Government had yet to reach out to it in spite of a subsisting offer of assistance and an appeal to the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration to convene a national security summit.

The party said, We make bold to say that the Federal Government has been very insincere in its persistent call for national unity to combat the despicable Boko Haram sect.

This has been manifest, perhaps more than at any other time, since the tragic abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok over a month ago.

Up till this moment, the Federal Government has yet to reach out to the APC, the main opposition party, on how to forge a common front against this despicable terror group, despite our incessant efforts to reach out to the government.

Nigerians will recall our various interventions in which we stated clearly that only a non-partisan approach could help extricate Nigeria from the death grip of Boko Haram; how we have consistently called on the government to organise a national stakeholders summit to put all efforts together and how we have made a number of recommendations which we feel can help pep up the fight against the terror group.

The only response we have received so far is that in which the government said it had implemented or it is implementing those recommendations anyway, in what clearly amounts to an unnecessary hubris and a cold shoulder.

Weve not chosen Lagos gov candidate APC

Interim Publicity Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Joe Igbokwe | credits: File copy

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress on Tuesday refuted speculations that it had chosen former Accountant-General of the state, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, as its candidate for the 2015 governorship election in the state.

In a telephone interview with our correspondent, the Publicity Secretary of Lagos APC, Mr. Joe Igbokwe, said the recent endorsement of Ambode as the next governor of Lagos by the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, did not mean the party had picked him as its candidate.

He said, We have not chosen anybody as our candidate for the governorship election. The fact that the Oba of Lagos expressed his private opinion does not mean we have chosen a governorship candidate for 2015 election.

Also in a statement issued by Lagos APC on Tuesday, the party condemned the Peoples Democratic Party for threatening Oba Akiolu because of his personal endorsement of the candidature of Ambode for the Lagos State governorship contest in 2015.

APC also described as irresponsible, uncouth and callous the allegations levelled against the Oba of Lagos that he aided the rigging of elections in the state.

The party said the rude and callous statement emanating from Lagos PDP flowed from its frustration that the Oba rejected the multi-million dollar bribe the PDP had been dishing out to traditional rulers nationwide.

It added that the threat by the PDP to burn down the palace of the Oba of Lagos was a collective threat to the peace loving people of Lagos.

The statement read in part, For record purposes, the Oba of Lagos never made any illegal statement by stating his preference for the candidacy of Ambode who is still an aspirant of our party. We state that other traditional rulers have been known to make similar endorsements, and even President Goodluck Jonathan was openly cavorting traditional rulers all over the country recently for his presidential re-election aspiration.

It is understandable that the Lagos PDP has made itself a tale bearer that invests in speculating and circulating rumours and gossips, trading lies and innuendos over who gets what ticket and who backs who in Lagos APC, we dare say their attempt to pre-empt whoever emerges as APC candidate instead of working to present a credible candidate for their party, is downright silly and flows from the same lack of seriousness that has been the hallmark of Lagos PDP.

APGA writes Jonathan over exclusion from conference

The leadership of the All Progressives Grand Alliance has sent a protest letter to President Goodluck Jonathan over its exclusion from the ongoing national conference.

In the letter, the party complained that though it was invited to be part of the conference, those it sent there were not allowed to take their places at the conference.

A copy of the letter, which was signed by the partys National a Chairman, Chief Maxi Okwu and the National Secretary, Dr. Sadiq Saigoya, was made available to our correspondent through electronic mail.

The letter said that rather than allow the partys representatives to be part of the discussions at the conference, a letter was sent to it by the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. Prius Anyin, asking it to resolve the leadership crisis bedevilling the party with Chief Victor Umeh.

The letter to the President read, We are on notice that the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation advised the authentic National Chairman of APGA Chief Maxi Okwu and our erstwhile Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh to resolve the leadership disagreement in the party vis--vis the nomination of delegates to the national conference.

Sir, the leadership issue in the party has been resolved by both the Federal High Court Abuja and the Court of Appeal Abuja Division while the Federal High Court presided by Justice Abdulkadir Abdu-kafarati upheld Chief Maxi Okwu as the authentic National Chairman of the party on 15th January 2014, the court also dismissed Chief Umehs application for a stay of execution of the judgment that removed him from office on 14th April 2014.

On 29th April 2014, the Court of Appeal dismissed Chief Umehs application for a stay of execution of the Abuja Federal High court judgment. The appellate court has reserved judgment in the matter.

It is trite the Chief Maxi Okwu is the authentic National Chairman of APGA whose nominees should be allowed to participate in the national conference aimed at addressing critical issues and challenges affecting our great nation. As a key player in the political process APGA is a mass movement and the voice of the voiceless and should participate in this centenary confab that will mould and shape the destiny of Nigeria.

It craved the indulgence of the President to graciously intervene to allow APGA delegates to take their place atthe confab.

Those listed as representatives of the party are Chief Chris Ejike Uche and Maidoya.
