Jonathan lambasts APC over ward congress, candidates selection

President Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has described the Peoples Democratic Party as more democratic than other political parties in Nigeria.

Apparently referring to the opposition All Progressives Congress, Jonathan said the PDP was more democratic because it would not cancel ward congresses across the states without considering the wish of its members.

The President spoke at the South-East PDP rally held in Enugu, on Friday. The rally was tagged Unity Rally.

He said the party was not like another party, where a local government chairman can cancel a ward congress for no justifiable reason and without the peoples opinion.

Jonathan said the PDP is the only political platform in Nigeria where the voice of the people could count and decisions were taken based on the majority and popular vote.

We are not like one party in this country where one man or a group of people determine how the party is run, said the President.

He said, The national chairman of the PDP or any of its governors cant cancel a ward congress of the party just like that and with impunity. I, as the President, dont even have the powers to do so, but it is happening in a political party in this country.

According to him, he does not see anything progressive about some of the opposition political parties.

He said, One party tags itself as progressives but where are they progressing to. It is only in such progressive party that you find an ex-governor determining who gets what and how. Is that what you mean by progressives?

GDP rebasing: FG ridiculing itself, says APC

April 10, 2014 by Niyi Odebode and Everest Amaefule 4 Comments

The All Progressives Congress has dismissed Nigerias rebased Gross Domestic Product as a mindless public relations gimmick of the Federal Government.

The party, in a statement in Washington DC, United States, by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, on Thursday said the Federal Government had only succeeded in ridiculing itself.

On its part, the APC noted that the GDP rebasing was done after a World Bank report declared Nigeria as one of the countries harbouring the largest population of poor people in the world.

The opposition party stated, The Federal Government has only succeeded in opening itself to ridicule. This is because if ever there was a clear play at oxymoron, this is it: The largest economy with the largest population of the poor; the largest economy with the largest population of unemployed; the largest economy with the largest population of citizens living in darkness, and the largest economy with the worst infrastructure.

The party said there was too much poverty in the midst of plenty, adding that the economic growth, which the government had been trumpeting, was not a result of any deliberate government policies.

The APC said the Federal Government carried its joke too far by giving the impression that the emergence of the Nigerian economy as the largest in Africa was a function of the economic policies under the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration.

Edo APC leaders differ over ward congress

Members of the All Progressives Congress party in Edo South senatorial district of Edo State, on Wednesday differed over the conduct of Tuesdays ward congress in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that while some of the aggrieved members of the party have called for the cancellation of ward congress, the leadership of APC has, however, described the call as blackmail.

Reading a prepared statement at a news conference in Benin on Wednesday their leader, Chief Amos Osunbor, said the call for the cancellation became necessary because the conduct did not follow due process.

The aggrieved members, who faulted the process of the conduct of the congress, noted that the exercise was characterised by violence and thuggery.

They alleged that members of the committee mandated to conduct the congress were not on ground to perform their duties while materials for the exercise were not available for the congress.

As if the whole exercise was designed to fail, sponsored violence was observed across the venues in the senatorial district.

Armed thugs in government vehicles were seen unleashing mayhem on defenceless party faithful.

Furthermore, some local government chairmen were seen sponsoring violence in their respective council areas, Osunbor alleged.

The aggrieved members, therefore, demanded that the national leadership of the party should immediately cancel ward congresses.

They also demanded for the immediate dissolution of the state congress committee and the constitution of credible members to form a new committee.

Who owns the term social justice conservatives or progressives?

Utahs progressives desperately hope you say they do. Theyve built their entire 2014 campaign around a slew of traditional social justice issues the minimum wage, entitlements and more taxes on the wealthy. Their argument is simple: Their social justice policies will make a dent in the states 12.8 percent poverty rate and make the economy more fair. Its the right thing to do.

Not so fast. It stands to reason that President Obamas 5 years in office would back up the lefts claims. After all, hes promoted more social justice policies than perhaps any president since LBJ or FDR. Surely his actions would have borne some fruit for Americas neediest.

It hasnt happened. Since he took office, the wealthy have been the only ones to gain ground. The percentage of Americans in the workforce has fallen to its lowest level since 1970. One in six Americans is now on food stamps. And income inequality has grown even as the president and his party have tried to stop it.

How could this happen under a social justice president?

The simple fact is that intentions dont equal results. The lefts policies arent working which means its time for conservatives to step up to the social justice plate.

Conservatives should start by asking the downtrodden what they need most. In the conversations Ive had over the years, Ive identified three things: Moral transformation, material relief and opportunity. These are the central components of a real social justice platform.
