Card readers: Ondo APC backs INEC

The All Progressives Congress in Ondo State has expressed confidence that the use of smart card readers for authentication in the coming general elections will guarantee credible polls.

It also criticised those opposing the use of the machine, describing them as enemies of democracy.

Publicity Secretary of the party, Omoba Adesanya, in a statement on Wednesday said INECs adoption of the machine would also boost voters confidence and ensure the elections were peaceful.

He said, Voters were registered electronically through Data Capturing Machines, and to verify the authenticity of any voter, it has to be done through the same electronic process, before voting, to avoid counterfeiting.

This is a welcome development which will drastically reduce election rigging, through snatching of ballot boxes and papers, curb over-voting, and eliminate injection of names into the Voters Register.

He argued that with the credibility element in the use of the card readers, results would be more acceptable, reducing the possibility of crisis during and after the general elections.

According to him, litigations that will be emanating from the elections will be minimal.

Buhari didnt sign single term pack -Campaign office

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation on Wednesday dismissed claims by the Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu, that the APC signed a single term pact with Maj. Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (retd.).

The APC campaign described the governor as an incurable liar who is afflicted with mouth diarrhea.

This was contained in a statement signed by its Director of Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.

He was reacting to claims by Governor Aliyu that Presidential Candidate of APC, Maj.Gen Muhammadu Buhari, signed a single tenure pact.

According to him, this postulation was a figment of the Governors imagination, describing it as jaundiced, ill-motivated and irresponsible.

Shehu also said Aliyu has made a bad career of misguided claims of this nature in which he presents himself as a clairvoyant fly perching on the walls of political meetings across the country.

The statement partly read, The APCPCO Spokesman dismissed Governor Aliyus recent vituperation and insinuation as the outbursts of a perpetual rabble-rouser, amateurish ethno-religious propagandist and unrepentant mischief-maker bent on stocking division and disaffection in the APC.

Shehu also said the APC Campaign is, however, not surprised at Governor Aliyus blatant lies, considering that he has also been at the centre of controversy of being in possession of a letter in which his partys presidential candidate signed onto a one-term pact with governors of the ruling party.

PDP using religion to divide Nigeria Buhari

The All Progressives Congress Presidential Candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), said in Kaduna on Wednesday that it was part of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party antics to use religion to deceive Nigerians on the inevitable change they desire in the country ahead of the rescheduled March 28 presidential election.

Buhari said the PDP was only using religion, which he described as a matter of personal conviction, to divide the country.

The former Head of State, who spoke through the Vice Presidential candidate of the APC, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at an inter-faith engagement in Kaduna on Wednesday, said, And they have succeeded in making some of us victims of the tales, which they invent, propagate and sell as the gospel truth to gullible listeners; while it is all nothing but tissues of lies.

Buhari noted that in spite of what detractors had said and still saying, he was not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been.

He added that he had no agenda to Islamise the country when elected president in the rescheduled presidential election.

He said, I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been.

In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind, and nowhere in my record of service to our nation can this false toga, which political traducers have tried so hard to put on me, be substantiated.

Let me state this categorically that, I, Muhammadu Buhari, as an individual, and as a president, if given the opportunity to serve, have no personal religious agenda. And will not entertain, consider or promote the religious agenda of anyone.

I will not condone any initiative that seeks to promote one religion over the other. Neither I, nor my party, or any member of my team has any desire or plan to Islamise or Christianise Nigeria or support anyone with such intention.

He said he was recently informed that that his administration as Head of State had a balanced cabinet with key positions such as Finance, Energy and Defence occupied by Christians, adding that 11 of the 19 governors he appointed were Christians.

PDP govs afraid of defeat -Okorocha

Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha | credits: File copy

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress Governors Forum, and Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has said the position of the governors of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party on the use of card readers for the forthcoming elections was a clear indication that PDP was already apprehensive of defeat at the polls.

PDP governors had expressed doubt at the preparedness of the Independent National Electoral Commission for the forthcoming elections especially on the proposed use of card reader.

Okorocha, who spoke through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Sam Onwuemedo, said card reader was a good innovation that every patriotic Nigerian should applaud.

He said anyone opposed to using the new technology capable of eliminating electoral fraud must have ulterior motive.

Okorocha regretted that PDP governors were scared at using card reader at a time when other Nigerians were rejoicing that an end to flawed electoral process was in sight.

His said, PDP has been caught by the fear of the unknown. The Nigerian masses have since abandoned them, and they are already aware of their fate at the poll.

PDP is afraid of its shadows. The party has lost some weight, he said.

He, however, said APC governors would soon meet and adopt a common position on the use of the card readers, while warning INEC not to fall into the antics of PDP.

Okorocha argued that INEC as a progressive institution, should not listen to the voice of retrogression.
