Some progressives split with Biden and the Democrats on … – The Boston Globe

These devastating attacks on Israelis are deeply alarming and my heart breaks for the victims & their loved ones, Pressley wrote this weekend on the X social media platform. We need an immediate ceasefire & de-escalation. It is long past time to stop this cycle of violence & trauma, and work toward a just & lasting peace in the region.

Markey issued a similar statement. Then, at a Boston rally in support of Israel on Monday, he called for a deescalation of the current violence. The pro-Israel crowd loudly booed for nearly a minute.

Representative Seth Moulton, a Salem Democrat, said Tuesday that the concern for the Palestinian people is appropriate but that calls by some progressives for deescalation are out of place given the scope of the Hamas attacks.

Did they call for a deescalation of violence after 9/11? he said. Now, look, in the long run, of course, we want the deescalation of violence. Thats what everyone wants. We want peace in the Middle East.

Moulton said its not difficult to simultaneously question some of Israels past actions in dealing with Palestinians blockaded in the Gaza Strip while also condemning Hamas terrorism. But, he added, This is no time for moral ambiguity.

I think there are some lawmakers who are thinking of this politically and not morally because there is no moral defense for what Hamas is doing, Moulton said.

Markey was not available to comment but a spokesperson shared his full remarks at the rally, which began in part, We stand with Israel. Israels people have the right to live in their rightful homeland, free from fear, free from violence.

In a statement Tuesday night, Pressley spokesperson said, The Congresswoman strongly and unequivocally condemns the horrific attack Hamas perpetrated, which has claimed the lives of Israeli families, children and elders. ... She believes Israel has a right to defend its citizens and that protecting Israeli, American, and Palestinian civilians in the region should be a priority right now.

Matt Duss, executive vice president of the Center for International Policy, a left-leaning policy think tank, said the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a difficult issue to talk about even in normal circumstances. The horrific attack by Hamas makes it even more so with emotions so raw.

Look at the statements from progressive members of Congress and they show great sympathy and support for Israel and shock at these attacks, said Duss, who was a longtime foreign policy adviser to Senator Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent.

Many of them also acknowledge that the Palestinians have been suffering under blockade and occupation . . . and Id completely reject the idea that showing sympathy for the Palestinians and support for their rights comes at the expense of support for Israel, or its peoples rights.

Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts unambiguously condemned the attacks. There is no justification for this violence, and innocent people on both sides will suffer hugely because of it. It must end now, Sanders wrote on X. Warren posted a similar statement on Saturday and reiterated it at the Boston rally.

But some activists have gone further than progressives in Congress and that has led to pushback. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive New York Democrat, publicly condemned comments made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City on Sunday, where The New York Times reported people cheered the attacks on Israel.

The bigotry and callousness expressed in Times Square on Sunday were unacceptable and harmful in this devastating moment, Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement. It also did not speak for the thousands of New Yorkers who are capable of rejecting both Hamas horrifying attacks against innocent civilians as well as the grave injustices and violence Palestinians face under occupation.

There was similar blowback to a joint statement Saturday from a coalition of Harvard student groups that said the Israeli government was entirely responsible for all unfolding violence.

Moulton and Representative Jake Auchincloss, both Harvard graduates and military veterans, criticized the statement.

Auchincloss, a Newton Democrat, called it morally depraved and in an interview Tuesday criticized the Harvard administration for not condemning it and voicing support for Israel. Later Tuesday, Harvard president Claudine Gay condemned what she called the terrorist atrocities perpetrated by Hamas.

This issue should not be hard to talk about, Auchincloss said. Terrorists dragged Jews from their houses and executed them. If you cant fully, forcefully, and unequivocally condemn that, then your own belief system needs to be examined.

Auchincloss also attended the Monday rally on Boston Common, where he drew cheers for telling the crowd now is not the time for equivocation. He declined on Tuesday to criticize Markey for his comments.

Obviously we had slightly diverging statements, but what I heard from Senator Markey overall . . . is that the United States should stand together and Ive also seen him vote to support Iron Dome, Auchincloss said. He cited near unanimous support from congressional Democrats for Israel, although Pressley and seven other House Democrats voted in 2021 against funding for the nations Iron Dome missile defense system. Ocasio-Cortez voted present.

I think its a mistake to try to spin this narrative of Democrats divided over Israel, Auchincloss said.

Representative Bill Keating, a Bourne Democrat who serves on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, also downplayed any divisions in the delegation or the party overall in Congress.

Its a big tent party. This is not uncommon to have a difference of opinion on controversial issues. Thats the nature of the Democratic Party, he said. I think the vast majority of our party is behind President Biden and his actions thus far.

Biden, a longtime staunch supporter of Israel, was unequivocal in his support Tuesday.

In this moment we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel. We stand with Israel. And we will make sure [they] have what it needs to respond to this attack, he said at the White House. Like every nation in the world, Israel has the right to respond, indeed has a duty to respond to these vicious attacks.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said his nations military would hit Hamas with a might and scale that the enemy has not yet known. Israel began launching a barrage of airstrikes over the weekend and executed what it called a complete siege of Gaza that included cutting off electricity, food, water, and fuel.

But Duss said Israel should not be given unqualified support and pointed to past polls showing Democratic voters have grown more sympathetic to the plight of the Palestinian people. A Gallup Poll released in March found that 49 percent of Democrats said their sympathies were more with the Palestinians and 38 percent were more with the Israelis. The support for the Palestinians represented an 11 point increase from a year earlier.

I think you certainly see a growing constituency in the party and in Congress who believe the United States needs to take care of the rights and security and dignity of Palestinians as well as Israelis, he said. And I would say that is not one at the expense of the other.

Scott hits Biden, progressives over response to Hamas attacks in Israel – The Hill

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) hit President Biden and progressives Tuesday over their response to the terrorist attacks by Hamas in Israel.

“While Hamas carried out these attacks, Joe Biden has blood on his hands,” Scott said in an address at the Hudson Institute.

“His weakness invited the attack. His cash giveaway to Iran helped fund terrorism. And after the attack, his administration suggested Israel should stand down. It’s a disgrace,” the presidential candidate continued.

A deal in September between the Biden administration and Iran, in which the U.S. transferred $6 billion in frozen Iran oil proceeds to Iran as part of a prisoner exchange agreement, has come under renewed scrutiny in the wake of Hamas’s attacks.

Officials have pushed back on criticism of the deal, which made the money available for limited humanitarian transactions. Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday disputed unsubstantiated claims that the Iranian assets may have helped pay for terror attacks outside the Gaza Strip, telling ABC’s “This Week” that “not a single dollar from that account has actually been spent to date.”

Scott went on to criticize progressive members of Congress, including Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), and Cori Bush’s, (D-Mo.), for their responses to the attacks and conflict in the region.

“The far left in this country has become incredibly hostile to the state of Israel. The most extreme statements have become a daily routine. They even dabble openly in anti-Semitism,” Scott said. “But President Biden will not stand up to them. Because he cares more about his own power.”

“Radical liberals are choosing their own political power over peace,” he said. “They would rather invite attacks on our allies than stand up to the fringe in their own party. It is cowardice that makes them complicit. And it has to stop.”

Scott’s remarks came shortly after Biden delivered a televised address to the nation on Tuesday, condemning the attacks by Hamas.

“In this moment we must be crystal clear: We stand with Israel,” Biden said in remarks from the White House. “And we will make sure Israel has what it needs to take care of its citizens, defend itself and respond to this attack. There’s no justification for terrorism. There’s no excuse.”

Biden said that American citizens are among those being held hostage by Hamas and said that the number of Americans killed in the terrorist attacks had risen to 14. The Israeli death toll from Hamas’s attacks has surpassed 1,000. Authorities in Gaza and the West Bank say 850 people have been killed in fighting there, according to The Associated Press.

Biden has spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu three times since the attacks. Additionally, he has met with his national security team each day since the crisis began Saturday, and the U.S. and European allies put out a statement on Monday affirming support for Israel. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is set to travel to Israel this week. The administration has also repositioned military assets in the region.

Meanwhile, some progressive Democrats have condemned the violence on both sides of the conflict, but have criticized Israel’s treatment of Palestinian civilians. Over the weekend, the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America sponsored a pro-Palestinian rally that took place in Manhattan on Sunday. Prominent New York Democrats including Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Rep. Ritchie Torres have condemned the rally. In a statement on Monday, Ocasio-Cortez condemned what she called the “bigotry and callousness” seen at the rally.

In his remarks on Tuesday, Scott called for the progressive members of Congress to condemn the Democratic Socialists of America or be expelled from Congress.

“Every member of the Squad should either quit the D.S.A. and repudiate the people who are cheering on deadly terrorism, or they must be expelled from Congress,” he said.

Bergus: A model white progressive for Black justice in Iowa City – The Gazette

Michael Tilley

Oct. 16, 2023 6:00 am

In his letter from the Birmingham Jail, Martin Luther King, Jr. lamented the white moderate who agreed with the concerns of Black justice advocates but criticized their methods, tone, or timing.

The lesson that white progressive leaders in Iowa City need to take from Kings letter is that their role is to bend the white moderate along the arc of justice, supporting those on the margins of our community. Ive seen Laura Bergus embody just that kind of voice. In the wake of the protests following George Floyds murder, Bergus became increasingly active in her efforts to hear voices of Black and other people of color, and used her insight to powerfully re-express those concerns and issues to white Iowa City while working to empower BIPOC voices.

Whether its been supporting the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and the need for their work in the face of complaints about the TRCs methods, tone, and timing; or advocating for reallocating police funds to social services in order to address the root causes of crime even when that position among progressives in white Iowa City had lost its luster; Bergus routinely and consistently is doing what all white progressives should be doing.

Bergus is intelligent, inspiring, courageous, and principled, and she is a fearless advocate for justice. The Iowa City Council needs someone who can powerfully call us to do justice to those at the margins of our community. Vote Bergus in the District A primary and in the November election.

Capitol Police Brief Progressives On Security Measures Amid Rise … – Yahoo News

The U.S. Capitol Police on Thursday briefed several progressive House members about security measures in place following an increase in violent threats against them in the days after Saturdays surprise attack on Israel, according to a new report.

Politico reported that Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (Minn.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.), Rashida Tlaib (Mich.), Summer Lee (Pa.) and Barbara Lee (Calif.) were among those to receive the briefings, citing three sources familiar with the matter.

A Capitol Police spokesperson told the outlet the department provided several briefings to lawmakers regarding enhanced protections in place.

The lawmakers have become targets over expressing positions critical of Israel as the country has continued bombarding Gaza in retribution for Hamas attack over the weekend.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (Wash.), who heads the Congressional Progressive Caucus, asked her fellow members during a closed-door meeting to defend their fellow Democratic lawmakers, according to Politico.

Meanwhile, the war in Israel continues to rage with more than 2,800 people confirmed dead on both sides.

The Israeli military on Friday ordered the evacuation of northern Gaza, which includes the densely populated Gaza City, within 24 hours ahead of what some presume will be a ground offensive.

The U.N. has warned the order would be impossible without devastating humanitarian consequences.

Ocasio-Cortez called the directive unacceptable in a post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Humanity is at stake, she said. Nearly half are children. We must halt this.

U.S. Capitol Police are beefing up security measures throughout the Capitol complex after Hamas called for Friday to be a global day of rage.

In a statement shared with HuffPost, the department said while there are not specific threats toward the Congress at this time, we are not taking any chances.

Some of what we are doing will be visible, but for safety reasons we cannot provide the public details about all of the resources that we are putting into protecting the Congress, a spokesperson said. Our dedicated teams are working around the clock to coordinate with our law enforcement and intelligence partners across the country to keep everyone safe.
