How Obama Ruined Race Relations – The Root

Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images

One of my favorite true-life parables is the story of Hungarian Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis. In the mid-1800s, Semmelweis worked in a maternity clinic where a large number of women died during childbirth. He believed that the problem was neither the medicine nor their treatments. Semmelweis believed that there were tiny little creatures living on the clinics medical instruments that were making the women sick. He tried to tell the people at the hospital that washing their hands and sterilizing their medical tools in a chlorine mixture would stop the spread of disease.

Everyone in the medical profession laughed at Dr. Semmelweis. If these germs were making people sick, why hadnt they heard of them before? More importantly, why couldnt they see them? Almost every medical professional thought it was a ridiculous theory, but Semmelweis never gave up. He told everyone who would listen about washing hands and sterilizing equipment, but no one listened to him.

When he was 47 years old, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was committed to an insane asylum, where he died.

Whenever conservative-leaning Caucasians begin listing Barack Obamas trespasses against America, they dont get far before they reach the favorite claim of the faction that wants to make America great again. Nestled between their accusations of socialism and sympathizing with terroristsjust above charges of Obamas madrassa education but below his Kenyan birthis the most frequently recurring charge against Obama and his administration:

Barack Obama made race relations worse in America.

According to his detractors, during Obamas presidency, racial animus between blacks and whites reached a fever pitch. He presided during the rise of Black Lives Matter. The riots in Ferguson, Mo., happened under his watch. The city of Baltimore burned during an uprising. Beyonc turned black. Everything was falling apart.

From their perspective, if Obama gets credit for ending two wars, rescuing the country from the brink of economic collapse and rescuing the auto industry, then he should take the blame for the increasing racial tension that spread across the country during his tenure.

They see the constant marches, the side eyes they receive in Wal-Mart parking lots, the Colin Kaepernick protest, the anti-police sentiment and even the natural-hair movement as Obamas fault, and they are upset about it. Before Obama sashayed his meddling ass into the Oval Office, white men were free to wave their Confederate flags, whisper racist jokes and touch whomevers hair they damn well wanted.

Heres the thing: They are probably right. Barack Obama did make race relations worse ...

For white people.

Since its inception, black people have known that this country was sick, but America treated its race problem in the same way the white world has treated everything else. Its why they feel comfortable teaching us that the Roman Empire ruled the world, even while richer, more advanced civilizations thrived around the globe. Its why your third-grade social studies teacher can tell you that Christopher Columbus discovered a land that already had people, governments and even constitutions.

In the great book of rewritten history, white people invented the blind spot and peekaboo. In their eyes, nothing exists until they see it, and if they refuse to acknowledge itthen it doesnt exist.

If Obama had not signed the Affordable Care Act, killed Osama bin Laden or saved the nations economy, the one thing for which he deserves credit is forcing America to confront its ideas about race and racism. He may not have explicitly championed Black Lives Matter or raised a black fist on the White House lawn, but his effect on the psyche of black America is undeniable.

Before the Obama administration, America could bury its head in the sand because black America knew there were no sympathetic ears inside the Bush regime, and Bill Clinton was too busy instituting mandatory minimums, advocating for unequal drug sentencing and ridding the country of superpredators. The Reagan administration was ... well ... the Reagan administration.

Then came Obama. The fact that a black man held the nations highest office forced a national self-examination of its sicknesswhether it wanted to or not. Obamas simple presence gave some white people the heebie-jeebies, and when they were confronted with unapologetic blackness, they werent just resistant, they were aghast. They couldnt believe that Negroes would be so ungrateful for centuries of white benevolence that they would bicker about small details like income inequality, an unfair justice system, education disparities and police lynchings.

And it is all Obamas fault. Caucasians say that Obama ruined race relations in the same way that law-enforcement officers say cellphone cameras ruined policing. They were trying to avoid it, but under Obama, black people kept waving white Americas past in its face. You know how black people are. They love bringing up old shit like prejudice.

And history.

And truth.

They dont want to talk about it, because it is an icky sordid past to confront, but the only people who will ever be negatively affected by the increasing dialogue about race in America are racists.

Just because wypipo ignored racial tension until 2008 doesnt mean it didnt exist. Just like Dr. Semmelweis, black America has been trying to tell them about it for years. We have seen the cause of the cancer, watched it spread and witnessed it snuffing out more black lives than anyone can imagine. We have screamed about the invisible disease at the top of our lungs, but they have laughed at us. They called us crazy. They even tried to blame it on Obama.

Yet they refuse to look at their own filthy hands.

President Obama’s Mysterious Palm Springs Vacay – TMZ.com

EXCLUSIVE

Barack and Michelle Obama flew from Washington D.C. to Palm Springs for a grand total of 3 days before jumping on a private jet and going back from where they came and then some ... so the question, was that the plan or was Palm Springs a washout?

Fact is ... it was raining like hell all weekend. It was also super cold for SoCal. Obama got in one round of golf and that's about it, before they boarded Sir Richard Branson's private jet and took off for the Caribbean.

On the surface it looks like the Obamas bailed because of crappy weather. But we found out their departure date was set even before the former prez left Washington D.C. We're told Palm Springs airport officials had conversations with the Secret Service about leaving on Monday, days before Branson's jet landed in the desert.

It's possible the Obamas made the decision to bail before leaving D.C. because they saw the weather report, but if that were the case why go to Palm Springs at all ... just beeline it for sunny Necker Island.

And there's this ... Sasha and Malia, who were staying in D.C. when their parents left for Palm Springs, took Branson's jet Saturday from Maryland to Palm Springs. We're assuming the girls went to the Caribbean with their parents, but we haven't see pics ... so far.

It could just be the former prez just wanted a round of golf with Larry Ellison and then blew out of town. It's what ballers do, right?

Obama’s Final Whopper as President – National Review

President Obama is known for telling some whoppers If you like your health-care plan, you can keep it is perhaps the most infamous so it shouldnt surprise anyone that he told a final one as president right before leaving office last week.

At his final press conference, Obama promised that he would continue to fight voter-ID laws and other measures designed to improve voting integrity. The U.S. is the only country among advanced democracies that makes it harder to vote, he claimed. It traces directly back to Jim Crow and the legacy of slavery, and it became sort of acceptable to restrict the franchise....This whole notion of election-voting fraud, this is something that has constantly been disproved. This is fake news.

The argument over whether or not there is voter fraud will rage on, in part because the Obama administration has spent eight years blocking states from gaining access to federal lists of non-citizen and other possibly illegal voters. Even so, there is abundant evidence that voter fraud is easy to commit. The Heritage Foundations website contains hundreds of recent examples of people convicted of stealing votes.

But Obamas first statement, that the U.S. is unique in trying to enforce ballot integrity,is demonstrably false.

All industrialized democracies and most that are not require voters to prove their identity before voting. Britain was a holdout, but last month it announced that persistent examples of voter fraud will require officials to see passports or other documentation from voters in areas prone to corruption.

In 2012, I attended a conference in Washington, D.C., of election officials from more than 60 countries; they convened there to observe the U.S. presidential election. Most were astonished that so many U.S. states dont require voter ID. Lawyers with whom I spoke are also astonished to see Obama link voter ID with the Jim Crow era. As John Hinderaker of the Powerline blog wrote:

President Obama says the effort to ensure ballot integrity traces directly back to Jim Crow and the legacy of slavery. This is idiotic. When Democrats imposed Jim Crow laws across the South in the wake of Reconstruction, they relied on poll taxes and ridiculously difficult or ambiguous tests administered only, apparently, to African Americans who hadnt finished a certain grade level to maintain Democratic Party control. Voter ID had nothing to do with it. But no one ever said that Barack Obama knows anything about history.

And if Obama knew much about geography, he might notice that our neighbors require voter ID. Canada adopted voter-ID requirements in 2007and saw them reaffirmed in 2010; they have worked smoothly since, with almost no complaints. Mexicos Credencial para Votar has a hologram, a photo, and other information embedded in it, and it is impossible to effectively tamper with it. Mexicos paper ballots have a level of sophistication equivalent to legal tender, Catherine Engelbrecht, of the nonprofit True the Vote organization, told me. Theyve found a balance between security and access to the polls that has restored confidence in their once tainted elections.

Britain is painfully learning that it too must take steps to restore confidence in its elections. Sir Eric Pickles, a former Conservative cabinet minister, warned earlier this year, in a government-commissioned report titled Securing the Ballot, that voter fraud had been allowed to fester in Muslim communities because of politically correct over-sensitivities about ethnicity and religion. Sir Eric said that the authorities were in a state of denial and were turning a blind eye to fraud cases.

Last month, Theresa Mays government responded to the problem. It announced that endemic corruption meant that voters in certain areas will now have to show photo identification. The government may even require people to prove their UK citizenship before granting them the right to vote. It also issued a nationwide ban on political workers handing in large numbers of completed postal ballots on election day. The maximum penalty for voter fraud will be raised from two to ten years. Legislation is being prepared to allow police to block people from intimidating voters near polling places.

Chris Skidmore, Britains minister for the Constitution, wrote in the Daily Telegraph:

We already ask that people prove who they are in order to rent a car, buy a mortgage, or travel abroad and I believe we should go further by taking the same approach to protect voting rights.

In many other transactions, ID is an essential requirement voting for a democratically elected government, your MP, or your councillor is one of the most important transactions someone can make and it is right that in turn their identity and the security of their vote should be protected.

Polls have shown that voter-ID laws and similar measures enjoy great popular support all over the world. In the U.S., a comprehensive Washington Post poll in 2012 found that 74 percent of respondents believed that voters should present a photo ID. Polls since then have confirmed that level of support.

Backing for voter ID in the Washington Post poll crossed all demographic lines 66 percent of independents, 60 percent of Democrats, 65 percent of African Americans, and 64 percent of Hispanics. The Post also asked whether respondents thought that the supporters and opponents of voter ID were acting out of genuine concern for fair elections or were instead trying to gain partisan advantage. Respondents replied that voter-ID opponents were acting more out of partisanship than supporters were. I think that party leaders have tried to make this a Republican-versus-Democrat issue, former Democratic state representative Jon Brien, who shepherded Rhode Islands 2011 voter-ID law through a Democratic legislature, told the Pew Centers Stateline news service. Its not. Its simply a good-government issue.

Which is precisely why its so disappointing to see Barack Obama use it to raise baseless fears that voter ID is a racist form of voter suppression. Even as he leaves office, the president who promised to unify us is continuing his level best to polarize and divide us.
