Only Liberals can be trusted with building transit, Wynne says

Future transit construction will be in jeopardy if the Ontario Liberals are not elected to another term in office, Leader Kathleen Wynne warned Tuesday.

And she also vowed never to privatize public transit if she wins the June 12 vote.

Commuters have a choice between our achievable plan to build transit or the Hudak PCs, who have promised to cancel infrastructure projects in the Greater Toronto Hamilton Area, she said at a construction site for the $5-billion Eglinton LRT in Toronto. Or the NDP, who simply do not have a transit plan at all.

The Liberals are promising to pour $29-billion into building LRTs, subways, highways and bridges over the next decade.

Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak has pledged to build the downtown relief subway line in Toronto, as well as subway extensions to Richmond Hill and Scarborough. He has said he would cancel light rail lines in the Toronto suburbs to help pay for the subway plan.

Mr. Hudak has not said what exactly he would kibosh. In addition to Eglinton, the Grits are currently planning LRTs in Hamilton, Mississauga, and on Finch and Sheppard avenues in Toronto.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath wants to move the downtown relief line to the top of the construction list and hike corporate taxes to help pay for it. She also supports most of the Liberals transit-building ideas, but wants to defer the Richmond Hill extension.

Ms. Horwath this week accused the Liberals of planning to privatize the TTC, because the governing party has hired a private company to build and maintain the Eglinton LRT. The line will, however, be run by the TTC.

Ms. Wynne on Tuesday said Ms. Horwaths claims are made up.

Liberals propose five-point plan to fix temporary foreign worker program

OTTAWA -- The Liberals are proposing a series of fixes to Ottawa's troubled temporary foreign worker program as fresh allegations of abuse emerge almost daily.

MP John McCallum, the party's immigration critic, proposes five reforms to the program that focus partly on better monitoring of employers who apply to bring in foreigners.

He adds that the government should scale the program back and focus on its original purpose -- to fill labour shortages when there is a legitimate need.

In recent weeks, a spate of allegations suggests some companies are turning to the program in sectors and regions of the country where there are no labour shortages.

Helicopter pilots, waitresses and mall workers are among those who have stepped forward to complain.

Employment Minister Jason Kenney has pledged to lower the boom on those abusing the program and has already banned restaurants from applying for temporary foreign workers.

New rule changes are expected soon, including beefing up the auditing powers of federal inspectors.

McCallum points out that between 2005 and 2012, the number of temporary foreign workers in Canada more than doubled.

He wants the government to tighten the so-called labour market opinion process. Employers must apply for a positive labour market opinion if they want to hire a foreigner on a temporary basis.

McCallum also repeated his demand for a review by the auditor general.
