48 Hours In: Ibiza

Ibiza's summer season is just kicking off hotels, restaurants and bars closed for the winter are reopening; the sea has begun to shrug off its chill and the island's nightclubs throw open their doors to DJs once again with opening parties this week. High season doesn't kick in until July, so this is a brilliant time to explore the White Isle's beautiful beaches and idyllic countryside before the real heat and the revellers descend.

Touch down

British Airways (0844 493 0787; ba.com) has launched a new twice-weekly link to Ibiza from Heathrow. BA also flies from London City and Gatwick, while easyJet (0843 104 5000; easyJet.com) flies from Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Belfast, Glasgow and Liverpool. Monarch (0871 940 5040; flymonarch.com) goes from Birmingham, Gatwick, Manchester and East Midlands. Ryanair (0871 246 0000; ryanair.com) and Jet2 (0871 226 1737; jet2.com) both fly from eight UK airports, while Thomas Cook (0871 230 2406; flythomascook.com) flies from 14 airports and Thomson (0871 231 4787; thomson.com) from 15.

The airport (1) is 7.5km south of Ibiza Town (Eivissa in Catalan). Buses (00 34 971 340 382; ibizabus.com) run from outside the terminal to Ibiza Town every 20 minutes from 6.30am to 12.30am, and to San Antonio on the west coast every hour from 8am to 1am. Tickets cost 3.20 to either town and are available on board. Taxis are metered; the fare to Ibiza Town is about 12 and nearer 40 to the furthest point of the island.

Get your bearings

Ibiza is an island of two halves: the quiet, rural north is a foil to the more developed, fashionable south. The two biggest towns are charming Ibiza Town on the east coast and party hub San Antonio on the west, the throbbing hub of package deals, and stag and hen weekends. Beaches vary between small, pebblycoves and long sandy stretches.

There is a good tourist office at the airport (1) (00 34 971 809 118; ibiza.travel/en; 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday, 9am to 3.15pm Sunday) and another tourist office (2) opposite the cathedral (3) in Ibiza's old town (00 34 971 399 232; 10am to 2pm and 5pm to 8pm Monday to Saturday, 10am to 2pm Sunday).

Check in

The Giri Residence (4) at Carrer Principal 3-5 in San Joan (00 34 971 333 345; thegiri.com) is stylish but relaxed. This is luxury Ibiza-style: there's no bowing and scraping; you can have breakfast at 6pm if you like. Of the five rooms, Bougainvillea is the biggest and most private; the spa is small but striking. Doubles start at 395, including breakfast.

Reached via winding country lanes lined with wild flowers, Es Cucons (5) at Carrer Cami des Pla de Corona 110 (00 34 971 80 55 01; escucons.com) is a rural idyll. Sixteen bedrooms are scattered between the original finca (farmhouse) and stables; the outdoor spa is set amid almond groves. The simple Mediterranean food is first class. The Nightclub Scene and DJ Rivalries Form the Backdrop to a New Sultry Lesbian Novel — “Journey to Ibiza”

MIAMI BEACH, Fla., May 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --The steamy love story of Natalie and Victoria that started in "To Love a Woman or Butterflies Butterflies Butterflies" evolves to tell the tale of Rita and Maggie in the second lesbian romance novel from author Fire De Ville, "Journey to Ibiza."

Set amidst the intoxicating world of big city nightclubs and DJ rivalries, "Journey to Ibiza" begins with a chance encounter between Maggie, a struggling DJ, and Rita, a budding music producer, thanks to a partially hidden hat. The chance encounter soon evolves into a deep friendship, the discovery of a mutual attraction to music, and a "should she or shouldn't she" take the plunge into a relationship at the risk of ruining the friendship. Along the way, there's a seemingly magic coin, a stolen remix of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," matching yin and yang tattoos, and a cavalcade of characters with names like DJ Boobs, DJ Fat Cat Daddy, and a bitchy thieving DJ Jules.

Readers follow the cast of characters through the club scene of the city, during family parties and holidays, through numerous sexual encounters, along on a doomed DJ tour, and eventually to the sun-soaked sands of Ibiza where Maggie, as DJ Maggie Moo Moo, just might get her big break. Central to the story is Maggie and Rita's relationship, first friendship, then lovers, and then at odds with one another. Will they reconcile? Their support network, including Rita's Godmother Victoria and her partner Natalie from the first book, are confident that these two girls were meant for one another, so they get to work behind the scenes.

While part of an over-arching trilogy, "Journey to Ibiza" is a stand-alone read, according to De Ville. Familiar characters from the first book return, but De Ville populates this second book with fresh and intriguing personalities so new fans to the series won't feel left out.

With the popularity of her debut novel, De Ville is establishing herself as an exciting new voice in female erotic literature, and this sultry story takes readers on an amazing -- and steamy -- journey. "I wanted to communicate to the world through these two characters that love is love, nothing more, nothing less," she says. "It doesn't matter who you love as long as you love."

"Journey to Ibiza" is published by Friesen Press and is now available for Kindle and in soft cover and hardcover directly from the publisher's website and Amazon.com with prices starting at $5.99. Visit: http://www.Firedeville.com to order.

The quiet side of Ayia Napa

Mention Ayia Napa to anyone under 30 and a glazed yet slightly euphoric look may well cross their face. Either that or a look of shame. Of course, the majority who have been will have no idea where Ayia Napa actually is, but that's what breakfast lagers, fishbowl cocktails and free shots in every bar do to you.

Ayia Napa has a reputation as the party capital of Cyprus. The third- largest of the Mediterranean islands, Cyprus lies deep in the southernmost corner of Europe, past Greece and close to the coasts of Turkey, Syria and the Lebanon.

With its ancient history, Middle Eastern temperatures and aquamarine waters, it's an island that should shout of the exotic, but it seems every- one's had a piece of it. Under British administration until 1960, Cyprus retains a legacy of driving on the left, three-pin electrical sockets and, more controversially, two military bases.

In 1974, Turkey invaded, and still controls the north of the island in the shape of the self-styled "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" the Green Line marking the border with the internationally recognised Republic runs close to Ayia Napa itself.

However, from a tourism perspective, the past 15 years have seen Ayia Napa become synonymous with hot summer clubbing, rather than political intrigue.

Although not nearly as wild as it was in its early Noughties heyday, Ayia Napa still has more than 80 bars and more than a dozen nightclubs. In July and August it's a magnet for the 18-30 demographic: a young-and-looking-for-fun crowd. But despite this hedonistic reputation, the partygoers make up only a small percentage of Ayia Napa's visitors. The rest are families and couples who flock here for the pale, sandy beaches, safe, clear waters and relaxed, friendly atmosphere all at affordable prices.

It's easy to see why they come. If you can see past the somewhat tacky bars advertising live sport, London Pride and a full English breakfast, Ayia Napa is home to some of the best beaches in Cyprus. A string of stylish lounge bars have also opened recently including the super-cool Pepper and smart hotels such as the Napa Mermaid and Sunrise Pearl, which come with designer spas and slick restaurants.

I stayed at the Nissi Beach resort, Ayia Napa's very first hotel. Built in the Seventies, when the town was little more than a fishing village and the nightlife was of the games-of- dominoes variety. Now a smart four-star hotel set in lush tropical gardens, it overlooks the beautiful swathe of Nissi beach itself, Ayia Napa's most popular stretch of sand.

At my insistence, Stelios, my local guide for the week, took me on a brief tour of Platia Seferi, known as "The Square", the small but infamous party district that's recognisable from shows such as Channel 4's Sun, Sea and Suspicious Parents. This pocket of fun in the centre of town is the area most families avoid. The square is a dense clutch of neon-lit theme bars, nightclubs and big-brand, fast-food outlets. Perhaps it's the heavy bass beating from every bar, the Day-Glo posters promising a good time or the pints of cocktails for 4 , but as a former worshipper at Ibiza, Magaluf and the Costas, I felt a certain affinity to the place.

But just as I was about to give in to temptation, throw on a "Frankie Says Relax" T-shirt and down a pint of Sex on the Beach, Stelios whisked me past a bar called Teasers and straight into a monastery tucked away in the very heart of Ayia Napa's party zone. Formed around an ancient chapel carved from a cave, the sandstone 15th-century Venetian monastery is set in a beautiful, tree-lined courtyard and is just the place to confess the sins of the night before.
