Yesterday the mercury climbed as high as 19.7C - hotter than Ibiza

Britain is expected to bask in temperatures of 21C (70F) today the hottest of the year so far, writes Patrick Hill in the Sunday People.

Yesterday thousands flocked to beaches, beer gardens and parks as thermometers climbed as high as 19.7C (67F).

The hottest recorded spots were in London's St James's Park and in Northolt, North West London.

Ibiza reached only 17C (63F).

And the balmy weather is expected to continue this week as hot air arriving from the Continent spreads north.

The highest temperature recorded so far this year was 20.5C (69F) in Gravesend, Kent, on March 9.

MeteoGroup forecaster Rachel Vince said: "We are in for a mild spell over the next few days and it will be nice for most of the country."

But some parts of the UK will be cooler in the coming week.

Eastern Scotland and North East England are likely see some misty spells.

Baia do Sancho, with its crystal clear water and soft white sand surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls, has been voted the best beach in the world by TripAdvisor users. The secluded bayon an island off the coast of Brazil tops a list of beaches in exotic destinations such as the Seychelles, Hawaii, the Turks & Caicos islands... and South Wales.

Rhossili Bay on the Gower peninsula made it to No 9 on the list. It also topped the list of the UK's best beaches, and was voted third best in Europe after beaches in Sicily and Formentera.
