Hillary Clinton recruits chief strategist, media adviser for 2016 effort

Hillary Rodham Clinton is building out the senior leadership team for her likely 2016 presidential campaign, enlisting Joel Benenson as her chief strategist and pollster and Jim Margolis as her media adviser, Democrats familiar with the moves said Tuesday.

Both Benenson and Margolis are veteran Democratic operatives who worked on President Obamas 2008 and 2012 campaigns.

On the likely Clinton campaign, they would work closely with two other aides that have been previously reported: John Podesta, who is expected to leave his White House post as counselor to Obama in February to serve as Clintons campaign chairman and enforcer, and Robby Mook, who would become campaign manager, these Democrats said.

Benenson, who is based in New York, served as the lead pollster on Obamas campaigns, but is poised to take on a broader portfolio for Clinton as her chief strategist, the role David Axelrod played for Obama.Politico reported last week that Benenson was advising Clinton as she makes a final decision about a presidential run.

His role in helping her to think this through is to provide both his specific expertise and counsel, said one person familiar with the effort.

People familiar with the Clinton operation said polling responsibilities would be divided among Benensons firm and other Democratic pollsters, including two others that worked on Obamas campaign: John Anzalone and David Binder.

Benenson helped guide then-candidate Barack Obamas primary campaign against Clinton in 2008 as well as the general election he won that year. Benenson also worked for Obama during his 2012 reelection. He previously worked for former president Bill Clinton.

His biography on his firms web site lists him as the only Democratic pollster in history to have played a leading role in three winning presidential campaigns.

Margolis is a longtime political adviser to Senate Minority Leader Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.) and has worked on the campaigns of many Senate Democrats. His firm, GMMB, is a prominent Democratic media firm and one of the few with a production, creative and media-buying staff large enough to handle a campaign on the scale of the one Clinton is likely to build.

In 2008, Clinton relied on Mark Penn - a pollster and former adviser to husband Bill Clinton - as her chief strategist. Penn was widely blamed for being an architect of her failed strategy in that years Democratic primaries and many Clinton allies have encouraged her to turn elsewhere for counsel this time around.

Jay Leno: Hillary Clinton Seems Very Old, ‘Very Slow …

4430336

Comedian Jay Leno says he likes presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, but she just seems so old.

Speaking of Clinton on HBOs Real Time with Bill Maher Friday, Leno commented, I dont see the fire.

Her and Elizabeth Warren are almost the same age, Leno said, comparing Hillary to the Massachusetts senator beloved by the left wing of the Democratic Party. And I see Elizabeth Warren come out boom throwing punches. Boom, boom, boom, boom.

And I like her, Leno continued, speaking of Hillary. But she seems to be sort of, she seems very slow and very I dont see that fire, you know, that fire that I used to see, that I see in Elizabeth Warren. Because I say to people, how much younger is Elizabeth Warren than Hillary? And people go, oh, 15 years. No! 18 months.

Even novelist and fellow panelist Salman Rushdie joined in the conversation to make a joke about Hillarys age.

I have this fantasy about both of them being on the ticket, Rushdie started before being cut off by Maher.

What happens in your fantasy? Maher said to laughter.

Rushdie, whonotoriouslydates younger women, quipped back: How could I put this? Theyre a little old for me.

The Fix: There is now an anti-Hillary Clinton coloring book. And, yes, there is a Benghazi page.

Source: America Rising PAC

At the end of last year, Ulysses Press released a Hillary Clinton coloring book. It is titled, "Hillary: The Coloring Book."The Chicago Sun-Timesdescribed the Clinton-themed entertainment thusly:

Unlike Ted Cruz Saves America, Clinton doesnt get the superhero treatment, but instead, has a heavy dose of pantsuits, ready to be finished off by your young artists.

Amazon reviewers seemed to be big fans of the Hillary coloring book, noting its "attractive matte cover" and its appropriateness for "adults or kids." One reviewer wrote that she"bought this coloring book as a joke for my 33 year old daughter who attended college and interned with Hillary's speech writer in DC. It became 'the gift'for Christmas and was posted on her Facebook page."

Unsurprisingly, the Republican opposition research organization America Rising PAC did not agree, and decided to make a supplement to the Hillary Clinton coloring book.

If you ever wanted to color in a picture of Hillary Clinton testifying about the Benghazi attacks, now is your chance.

In a world that includes politicians making Harlem Shake videos, politicians taking selfies and politicians being Twitter trolls, you may not be shocked to learn this isn't the first time someone has designed anti-Hillary Clinton coloringbook pages. In 2007, the "Very Unofficial Hillary Clinton Coloring Book" included "challenging activities for all ages" including,"'Help Hillary be More Macho' and 'Dress Bill for Any Occasion' (paper doll cut out clothes), and 'Play Running Mate Roulette.'"

Now might be the point in this post where you groan about how intense opposition research groups have become(onedidchase Scott Brown in a canoe during the midterms), but in the case of coloring books, they're just following historical precedent.Thisis far from the first time a publisher has let inquiring minds color in a candidate who has managed to keep statements about their political future aggravatingly monochrome.

You can find coloring books aboutPope Francis,9/11,Barack Obama, the 2012 presidential election, elections in Canada during the 1960s, JFK, elections in Chicago during the 1980s, Fidel Castro, Geraldine Ferraro, Nikita Khrushchev, state income taxes in New Jerseyanddisaster preparedness. In the 1960s, coloring book were produced that made fun of the John Birch Society, bureaucrats and JFK's "New Frontier."

An article in the New York Times discussing these satirical coloring books could not ascertain what benefit the coloring book makers got from producing them.
