Under Scrutiny, Hillary Clinton Asks for State Department …

Hillary Clinton on Wednesday asked the State Department to release the emails she sent from her personal account during her term as Secretary of State. But a State Department spokesperson told ABC News it will be "several months" before the emails are released, because the department will need time to review the emails and remove sensitive and personal information.

I want the public to see my email. I asked State to release them. They said they will review them for release as soon as possible, Clinton wrote on Wednesday night..

State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf, in a statement that followed Clinton's tweet, said the department is focused on reviewing Clinton's emails.

"The State Department will review for public release the emails provided by Secretary Clinton to the Department, using a normal process that guides such releases, the statement reads. We will undertake this review as quickly as possible; given the sheer volume of the document set, this review will take some time to complete.

Clintons team submitted 55,000 pages of emails to the State Department, but an unknown number of emails that do not pertain to work will not be turned over, a Clinton aide told ABC News.

The storage of Clintons email has come under scrutiny after a New York Times report revealed she used a personal, non-governmental email address to conduct official business as secretary of state. The Associated Press reported Tuesday Clinton used a personal server based in her New York home to host her emails.

Clinton, 67, used only one email address during her tenure, her attorney David Kendall wrote in an email to the House Select Committee, which is tasked with investigating the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi,Libya. The committee sent subpoenas to the State Department Wednesday requesting all of Clinton's communications related to Libya.

The Select Committee on Benghazi today issued subpoenas for all communications of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton related to Libya and to the State Department for other individuals who have information pertinent to the investigation, Jamal Ware, communications director for the committee, wrote in a statement. The Committee also has issued preservation letters to internet firms informing them of their legal obligation to protect all relevant documents.

The email account that Clinton used while working at the State Department was hdr22@clintonemail.com and was traced to a server based out of Chappaqua, New York, where she and former President Bill Clinton have a home, ABC News confirmed.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton checks her mobile phone in March 2012 after her address to the Security Council at United Nations headquarters. While she's asked the State Department to quickly release her emails from her tenure as secretary, the process likely will take months dragging out media coverage and critical questions.

The State Department says it will work as quickly as possible to review the emails former Secretary Hillary Clinton turned over in 2014, but combing through all 55,000 pages could take months.

This week Clinton asked the department to make the emails public, in hopes of tamping down the controversy around news that she used a personal server for all State Department correspondence.

A review that drags on for months is not what Clinton's political advisers would have wanted, just as she prepares to launch what's expected to be her 2016 presidential campaign.

"One of the most important principles in crisis management, is try to put all the information out as best you can in one fell swoop in order to avoid the, you know, the drip, drip, drip..." said Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, who helped manage responses to scandals during Bill Clinton's time in the White House.

The Obama administration has broken that rule repeatedly when it comes to the 2012 killing of four Americans at a diplomatic outpost in Benghazi, Libya. Despite numerous earlier investigations, the State Department still found 15,000 pages of previously undisclosed Benghazi documents to turn over to a congressional select committee this past summer.

That's when lawmakers say they discovered that Clinton had relied on a personal email account as secretary. The select committee issued subpoenas this week for any other Benghazi communications that might be stored on Clinton's personal server.

"The State Department does not have all of Secretary Clinton's emails on its servers," said committee chairman Trey Gowdy (R-SC). "Only she has a complete record. And the committee is going to have to go to her, and her attorneys and her email providers, to ensure we have access to everything the American people are entitled to know."

Gowdy and others also are asking what the White House knew about Clinton's email habits, and whether she'd broken any rules by using a private account. White House spokesman Josh Earnest suggests Clinton is in compliance with the Federal Records Act now but in a signifcant qualifier, he added that that only is true if the 55,000 pages Clinton and her staff turned over includes all of her official correspondence.
