Hillary Clinton Renews Tradition Of Trial By News Conference

Former Secretary of State and likely 2016 presidential candidate Hillary Clinton faces the media Tuesday over her use of a private server and email account she used to conduct public business.

In the days ahead, strenuous efforts will be made to prove or disprove the assertions Hillary Clinton made in her news conference Tuesday regarding her email accounts. The fate of Clinton's presumed presidential candidacy will depend on that struggle.

Or not.

In past presidential cycles we have seen many a news conference where careers on the national stage seemed to hang in the balance. Some of these moments have led to redemption, others to utter disaster. And still others have proved inconclusive, with other factors determining the candidate's fate.

No. 1 in the redemption category has to be Richard Nixon's iconic "Checkers" speech in 1952, when stories about gifts received by his family threatened to push him off the Republican presidential ticket as Dwight Eisenhower's running mate.

Richard Nixon, Republican candidate for the vice presidency, explains an $18,000 expense fund on national television on Sept. 23, 1952. The appearance was nicknamed his "Checkers" speech because of his reference to the family cocker spaniel, the one contribution he admitted receiving, from a Texas supporter. AP hide caption

The candidate spoke of his wife's modest "Republican cloth coat" (no mink or fox for Pat Nixon) and a puppy given to his daughters, Julie and Tricia. The girls named him Checkers. "We're going to keep it," said Nixon, striking a tone of mock defiance.

The video of this artifact looks hopelessly crude and grainy, but this performance on TV was among the first political events of consequence carried on that fledgling medium. Eisenhower kept the young senator from California on the ticket (partly to placate the party's Western conservatives) and Nixon would be in the White House for nearly 14 of the next 22 years.

Reliable Source: Hillary Clinton, yogi-in-chief? Heres what we know about her time on the mat.

Theres lots we dont know about Hillary Clintons e-mail cache from her days as secretary of state. But one thing we do know: She was a diligent yogi!

Clinton claimed in a Tuesday news conference that among the e-mails she deleted from her private account were the typical fare about planning her daughters wedding, family vacations, and her yoga routines.

E-mailed yoga sequences arepretty standard practice for VIPclients, says Washington-based yoga instructor Adeoye Mabogunje, who often provides students who are frequently too busy for regular sessions with a teacher with yoga poses to do on their own.

Clintons sessions probably take place in her home,or even her office, says Mabogunje, who often connects with high-powered clients through the luxury on-call service Veluxe.

Yoga experts agree that its most likely that Clinton, 67, is practicing Hatha yoga, the most common form of yoga, and easier than, say, the physically demanding Vinyasa, or hot yoga, which would be difficult to pull off outside a studio. I would assume its Hatha, says Jessica Sandhu, whoteaches at upscale venues around town, includingthe White House Fitness Center. Its focused on building strength but theres just one pose at a time and its not too fast-paced.

We reached out to some of Washingtons top yoga instructors to the stars (no, really, thats a thing), and none would fess up to coaching Clinton through her downward dogs but of course, discretion is the name of that game, so who knows?

The former first ladyhad already talked publicly about her burgeoning yoga commitment. In a splashy spread in People magazine in June, Clinton talked up her yoga and water aerobics. And a September New York Times story quotes friends as saying that she was full of energy from working out with a trainer and getting into yoga.

So her Warrior poses areon fleek. Good for her. But what about the political implications of her relatively new workout routine? First, talking up her time on the mat may be a way to dispel concerns about her age or health, typical fare for any candidate but one that a Republican candidate is likely to raise.

And it makes her more relatable, says veteran Democratic strategistJoe Trippi. Gone are the days when yoga was seen as some kind of exotic, vaguely cultish pursuit. Now, its something the potential presidential candidate mighthave in common with moms down at the YMCA.

Yoga is to 2016 is what jogging was to, like, 1990, Trippi says. When voters saw former presidents Bill Clinton or George W. Bush jogging, he says, they would think, Hey, I like to jog, too. Its the same thing now with yoga, for women in particular.

How Hillary Clinton answers on e-mail flap created more questions

Last week, we learned for seemingly the first time that, while she was secretary of State from 2009 through the beginning of 2013,Hillary Clinton solely utilized a private e-mail accountthat was set up on a server that was kept in her home rather than an official State Department e-mail account. Rather than going away like a one-day story, the story has percolated in the political media thanks in no small part to the fact that new revelations and questions seemed to be coming out every day while the White House and State Department both seemed to be rather ham-handed in their response to questions about how it came about the Clinton was allowed to do this back in 2009, what kind of security was involved, who had control over the server itself, and whether or not Hillary Clinton had ever communicated with the president or other White House personnel using her personal e-mail account. Through it all, though, there was almost no response from Hillary Clinton outside of a single tweet when the story first broke. Obviously, her advisers had hoped the story would die out on its own, but it became apparent by the time the new week began that this wasnt the case so, on Tuesday, the former secretary of State addressed the media after an appearance at the United Nations, but her statements created as many questions as they answered:

Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday defended her exclusive use of a private email address during her time as secretary of state as a matter of convenience, saying that about 30,000 of her work-related emails would be made public, but that thousands more that she deemed personal had been deleted.

I thought using one device would be simpler; obviously, it hasnt worked out that way, she said in her first public comments since the issue emerged last week.

She said that most of her emails were work-related, went to government employees and were captured on government servers. Mrs. Clinton said that the State Department would make public all of her work-related emails, but that her personal email about issues such as her daughters wedding and the death of her mother would remain private.

I feel that I have taken unprecedented steps to provide these public emails; they will be in the public domain, she said.

Mrs. Clinton spoke for about 20 minutes during a news conference, delivering a statement on womens issues and denouncing moves by Republican lawmakers to undermine efforts for a nuclear agreement with Iran, before turning to the controversy over her emails.

Expressing a mix of regret and defensiveness over the matter, Mrs. Clinton emphasized that she broke no laws. I fully complied with every rule, she said, adding that no classified material had been sent on her email.

However, she remained steadfast that she would not turn over personal emails and said that those messages in fact had been deleted.

They were about personal and private matters that I believed were in the scope of my personal privacy and particularly that of other people, she said. They had nothing to do with work. I didnt see a need to keep them.

The State Department said on Tuesday that it would publish online the full set of emails provided by Mrs. Clinton from her time as secretary of state.
