Former Greek PM unveils new party

Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has announced the formation of a new party about three weeks before a snap national election on January 25.

Papandreou, the son and grandson of prime ministers, unveiled the Movement of Democrat Socialists on Saturday in front of thousands of supporters.

He presented himself as a determined reformist against the old "corrupt" system that brought the protracted financial crisis to Greece.

Papandreou led the PASOK party, founded by his father in 1974, from 2004 to 2012 and as prime minister from 2009 to 2011, he bore the brunt of the crisis and the onus of signing a bailout deal, which, although it prevented Greece from defaulting, is detested by many because the economy shrank by over a quarter and unemployment soared to record levels.

Left-wing ahead

The Greek left-wing leader ahead in polls before upcoming elections said on Saturday his party's victory would start "necessary change" in Europe and stressed he would end austerity policies.

Alexis Tsipras, head of the Syriza party, said in a speech in Athens that "necessary change in Europe begins here, in Greece".

He named Spain, where the leftist Podemos party has led in polls ahead of elections later this year, and Ireland as countries that could follow.

Tsipras, whose party has led by between three and six points in the polls, said he wants to make Greece a "positive example of progressivism in Europe."

"With vigorous negotiations, we guarantee our country's truly equitable participation in the eurozone," he said. "We must finish with austerity."

The Source: Call it the delegations dilemma

Mecklenburg Countys legislators convene in Raleigh this month without a leader. Should they:

a) Elect a Democrat because they outnumber Republicans 9 to 8.

b) Elect a Republican because, after all, Republicans control both legislative chambers.

Choosing an answer will be one of the first orders of business for county lawmakers either before the General Assembly convenes Jan. 14 or soon thereafter.

Some want to elect a Democrat, like they did two years ago with then-Sen. Malcolm Graham.

I think we should elect a Democrat, says Rep. Beverly Earle, a Democrat and the delegations senior member. If you look at the local elected bodies, theyre all Democratic controlled. So why should it make a difference that Republicans control the House and Senate?

Republicans say it might be good idea to at least acknowledge where the legislative power lies. Some say a compromise might be co-chairmanship with one leader from each party. A Democrat open to that is Sen. Joel Ford.

Im looking for leadership that can be the most effective in representing the interests of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, Ford says. There are a large percentage of Democrats who would like to see a Democrat. (But) its so close that one vote could swing it.

The delegation traditionally looks after the interests of the city and county, divvying up bills and figuring out how to pass them. But last session members split along partisan lines on a lot of those issues, including the airport.

One lawmaker says just agreeing on the delegations role would be a good place to start.

Democrat Senate leader Harry Reid injured in freak exercise accident

"Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene. His doctors expect a full recovery," his office said.

As Democrat leader in the Senate he has been a key ally of President Barack Obama, especially over health reform and the economic stimulus bill.

With the Democrats losing their majority in the midterm elections Mr Reid, as minority leader, faces a far tougher time over the next two years trying to hold the resurgent Republicans at bay.

Born in poverty and raised in a home with no indoor plumbing, Mr Reids ascent to become one of the Senates most respected members has been impressive.

A former police officer, he worked his way through law school, to become first a city attorney before becoming a member of the Nevada State Assembly, where he made his name cleaning up the local casino industry.

In 2013 Senator Reid received hospital treatment for exhaustion, a year after suffering minor injuries in a car crash.

Previously, in 2005 he suffered a minor stroke, but has continued to exercise and still cuts a sprightly figure.

Senator Reid is not the only senior American politician to be hurt while trying to keep fit.

President Barack Obama suffered a split lip while playing basketball.

George W Bush suffered minor cuts and bruises after trying to leap out of the way of a rubbish truck while jogging during his time as Texas governor.

Democrat Domination Of Mayor's Office Bad For Citizenry: Steve Shine

January 2, 2015 Updated Jan 2, 2015 at 5:37 PM EST

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21ALIVE) --- The beginning of 2015 generally begins our thinking about an event that comes around once every four years, were talking about the Fort Wayne Mayoral Election.

The Democrats would seem to have a big advantage going into the race, but the leader of the other main party is arguing that its "underdog" status could put it on a path to success in November.

Republican 4th District City Councilman Mitch Harper is the only candidate so far to publicly say he wants the job.

But it seems like only a matter of time before Democrat incumbent Mayor Tom Henry will announce and be the immediate favorite to win re-election.

Henry could make it 20 straight years of Democrats controlling city hall.

"That leads to abuse, to favoritism, to lethargy for individuals becoming content," said Allen County Republican Party Chairman Steve Shine, who insists that under Henry's command, city streets and neighborhoods have been neglected for 7 years, before Henry proclaimed a month ago that infrastructure improvements will be priority one in 2015.

"We need someone in the mayor's office who is a visionary, who can plan for such things as maintaining the infrastructure, who can get ahead of the crime situation and not be reactionary to it," Shine said.

The lack of vision argument, that Shine speaks of, may be a tough sell with voters.

Downtown development is booming, and during the 2015 mayoral race, the progress on the Ash Skyline project will be a constant reminder.
