David Camerons pledges of unfunded tax cuts, a repeal of human-rights laws and tighter immigration rules wowed his Conservative Party last week. For different reasons, they also delighted his Liberal Democrat coalition partners.
To Liberal Democrats, much of what Camerons party set out is anathema. Still, aides to Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg said that far from being an obstacle to another coalition, the Tory pledges should be seen as an opening gambit for talks that might follow next Mays election -- one that polls suggest will end inconclusively and require another coalition.
By setting out their stall now, according to the two aides, who asked not to be named discussing internal party election strategy, the Tories had put themselves in a position from which they could be forced to give ground in negotiations.
Two weeks ago, we sat down and worked through what our message was for the conference and the election, but we still werent quite there, Olly Grender, a Liberal Democrat upper-house lawmaker and election strategist, said in an interview at her partys conference in Glasgow, Scotland. And then last week we watched in astonishment as George Osborne, and then Theresa May, and then David Cameron delivered our message with absolute clarity.

The Liberal Democrats are meeting in Glasgow this week having undergone a battering since they went into a coalition with Cameron four years ago. Adrift in the polls, theyve struggled to argue that they deserve credit for things that have gone well, such as the economic recovery, rather than just blame for whats gone badly, such as welfare cuts. And they havent found a way to convince non-Tory voters that Liberal Democrats have been a moderating influence on the Tory prime ministers government.
According to Anthony Wells of polling company YouGov Plc, the Tories would need a lead of at least seven percentage points over the opposition Labour Party to have a hope of getting a parliamentary majority allowing them to govern alone because of the way Britains electoral system works.
